Remarks:
This song turns 50 this Christmas. It was part of the television show “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (1966), the last five minutes of which are shown above. The nonsense words were added to make it sound like Latin, presumably because old hymns were in Latin.
I used to think Christmas came in a box, but the song is right:
Christmas day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp

This famous Christmas song is sung by all the “Whos” in “Whoville” in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”
It happened when CBS aired a TV special of that children’s story written in rhymed verse and the author, Geisel himself, penned the text of “Welcome Christmas” and other two songs included in the show.
Dr Seuss was initially against animating any of his books, but he eventually agreed. The animated film was telecast on 18 December 1966, and it has since become a holiday family favourite. It features the voice of Boris Karloff as the Grinch and the narrator, even though, at first, Geisel had protested against Karloff playing the Grinch, since he thought he would be “too scary.”
Like the book, “Welcome Christmas” contains fanciful linguistics: the Whos sing it in their mixed language, so that English speakers can understand only some words.
According to “hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com”, the song has existed for many hundreds of years as a hymn of a tiny, isolated village in Northern Norway, the village of Hu, whose language, Huvian, cannot be related to any other European language.
In the far past, Christian missionaries had located the village and converted its inhabitants, but then Hu had been forgotten, until the late 1800s when it was rediscovered. Their language was obscure, and Norwegian officials were unable to communicate with the Hus. Therefore, they sent there a Scottish linguist and anthropologist, who, after many years of living with and studying them, managed to translate many of their myths, legends and hymns.
“Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Benvenuto Natale, vieni da questa parte
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Benvenuto Natale giorno di Natale
Benvenuto, benvenuto fahoo ramus.
Benvenuto, benvenuto dahoo damus
Il giorno di Natale è a portata di mano
finché avremo le mani da stringere
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Benvenuto Natale porta la tua allegria
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores.
Benvenuti tutti coloro che sono lontani e vicini.
Benvenuto Natale, fahoo ramus.
Benvenuto Natale, dahoo damus
Il giorno di Natale ci sarà sempre,
fintanto che noi avremo noi stessi
Fahoo fores dahoo dores.
Benvenuto Natale porta la tua luce “
