New cars today are fantastic with all these amazing new technological advancements but sometimes we lose something in the sake of progress. Okay that may sound a little dramatic so let me bring it down a little. Show Do you remember back in the day that you used to be able to turn off the engine, have the ignition turned a quarter turn and still listen to the radio? You didn’t want to use up gas and you didn’t need heat or cooling but you did need the tunes. Well sadly today most of the newer model Ford vehicles will not allow you to play the radio while the engine is off. This is so frustrating, at best they may let it run briefly after turning off the engine so what can you do about this problem? Well good news there are a few hacks that help you circumvent the current system so keep reading while we tell you how to keep that music playing on while the engine is off. How to Keep the Radio on When Your Ford Model Car Is OffSince 2015 we have been able to enjoy some great radio time in our Ford vehicles without too much issue. The trouble is though since 2015 we would lose that radio as soon as we shut off the engine. The question then is how can we keep the radio on when the ignition is off? I am not going to sugarcoat this because you should know from the get go, this is not an easy thing to pull off and it does take a lot of work. If you are determined to have access to your music while you save gasoline then read on for some important tips and advice. There are three ways to achieve the radio being on while the Ford's ignition is off and they are as follows:
These three options can be used to varying levels of success; some may only allow short bursts of radio play while others are only limited by your battery charge. So let's get into the meat of the matter and show you how to achieve these radio work arounds in your Ford. Power Your Radio Using Accessory ModeThis radio hack works best on 2015 – 2019 model Ford vehicles and well really isn’t that much of a work around rather it’s a “for your information” kind of thing. To understand this one let me say that newer fords have three accessory modes while older models only have two. This two mode system allowed you to run the radio independent of the engine being on but the three mode system does not. The three modes in the newer Fords are ignition, start engine and accessory mode. In the 2015 – 2019 models the vehicle will allow the radio to stay on for a short period of time after the engine is turned off. So when you start and stop any ford model from these years they will activate the accessory mode and therefore your radio. The method for this is as follows:
This may work for up to 30 minutes to an hour depending on the Ford vehicle so you may have to repeat the process if you will be waiting for a while. Be aware however with the engine off the battery is not being charged so over use could leave you with a dead battery. This method does not require any new modifications, only an understanding of how accessory mode works. If this does not work for your model you should consult your owner manual for advice to turn on the accessory mode. Connecting Your Radio Directly to the BatteryIf you think this sounds risky then you are wise to have that reaction as of course this is not the safest of workarounds but if done properly it can work. Essentially what you would be doing here is attaching your Ford's wire harness directly to the car's battery bypassing the ignition altogether. The drawback to this method is that it can drain your battery more quickly and if not done completely correctly can result in damage which may prove costly to repair. That said this can let you listen to your radio for 1 – 2 hours while your engine remains off. If this is something you would like to attempt I will give you a rundown of the steps below but again let me caution you, you do this at your own risk:
If you are going to try this I suggest you seek out a video of this being done on your model Ford or something similar. Also let me again mention that this is a risky option which could lead to damage to your car. Install a Switch to Turn the Radio ON/OFFThis method is far safer than wiring the radio to the battery and you might even find the method listed in your owner's manual. This can allow you long use of the radio when the car is off without excessive battery drain. It should be noted that the battery will still drain at a normal rate so be aware of that being a possibility. Also this will only work for the radio and not CD players. Using this method takes a lot of work and effort so if you are not practically skilled in this department you may want to seek assistance for this modification. ConclusionIt can be frustrating to not be able to listen to the radio in your newer model Ford because the engine is not running. The options are to waste gas to listen to the radio or hope your phone is charged up enough to keep you entertained. There are some workarounds but they can be tricky and in some cases even a little risky. If you are technically skilled this may be something you can do but otherwise it may be something you have to live with. These days most of us have a smartphone to keep us occupied while we wait in the car so although frustrating is it really that bad? If you simply must find a way to keep the radio on while the engine is off I hoped this article helped and please be cautious with what you do. Keep accessory power on Anyone figured out how to press the start button and keep accessory power from turning off after a couple of minutes

If you push the start button without hitting the brake pedal, you get "full ACC power" but it basically puts the truck in the traditional "ignition on" position with all warning lights, fan blower, headlights, etc. If you shut it back off, you have 30 minutes of ACC power to run the radio, and the 10-minute timeout delay for running the power windows and sunroof. If you open a door, the power goes away. If you are just looking for radio, you can switch it on without hitting the start button...it will operate for 30 minutes and shut off. You can do this with the door open so the radio will play while you vacuum the truck out, etc. To me, the most annoying thing is you can no longer operate the wipers without having full ACC power on. It's funny, our 2010 Lincoln has push button start...and if you push the button without hitting the brake, the message center reads "Accessory Power Active" and it lets you do anything you could do with the old ignition key in the ACC position. No warning lights, no headlights, etc.I'm wondering if FOREScan can change what pushing the start button without hitting the brake does.

Sitting a 2015 now [QUOTE=bluewaveaudio;17039954]Anyone figured out how to press the start button and keep accessory power from turning off after a couple of minutes[/QUOTE I'm sitting in the drivers seat right now. Engine off. Double tapped Start button, not pressing the brake. With stopwatch. 30 second countdown was at 30 minute mark. Pressed ok to continue.

Which outlet is giving you 30 minutes? I updated the firmware in my dashcam tonight and provided it power from the 12v cigarette port that is next to the 110v port. As near as I can tell, as soon as I hit the start pushbutton to shut it off of accessory mode the dashcam also shut down. That led me to believe that there was zero power at that 12v port. |
