How to promote your roblox game

I've been spending the last month or so making a game, I'm hoping to have it done by March.

Over the course of the next month, I'll be polishing up the game and adding dev products and gamepasses to monetize it. The last few weeks I'll spend working on the graphics and some sound design.

Problem is, I have no idea how to effectively market a game. Asking around gives me a huge range of different answers, and I don't know what advice to follow.

So, I was hoping to get some answers from past/present game developers, so that I can draft a plan for March.

So, a few questions.

Best day/time of the week to market the game?

I've got a little over 100k robux budgeted for this project. Should I spend 50k on advertisements, 50k on sponsors? Should I be spending all 100k at once, or should I split it up? I'd like the game to ideally reach front page (or near it).

If I choose to go with the ad route, what size ads should I run? How much should I spend on testing ads to see which has the best CTR?

Should I create a "trailer" for the game for people to watch when they click on it?

Is 100k too little to reach front page? Assuming I spend all 100k in a weekend, what's a ballpark estimate for the number of visits I'd yield? (kind of a subjective question since it depends on icon/thumbnail/player retention.

What type of monetization is there besides in-game purchases (dev products) and gamepasses?

Should I follow up my "release weekend" by spending more robux to get the game from dying?

Assuming I go the sponsor route, should I sponsor on Desktop, Tablet, or Mobile? Or all three? (my game is compatible on all 3 devices)

For those curious, it's a space station game where players have to mine planets for materials to machine parts, and then use those parts to repair their station & expand it. The game is fully scripted, I'm just finishing up the building and sound design.

How to promote your roblox game

Jjwood1600 has been on Roblox since 2013, and has created two different games: “Game Dev Life” and “Escape”. He now is the lead developer of DoubleJgames.

On this week’s edition of the “From the Devs” series, we’ll be chatting with jjwood1600 to learn about how he leveraged different marketing tactics to promote his games! We asked jjwood1600 a few questions, read on to learn what promotional tactics have worked for him!

How, if at all, did you leverage marketing tactics to increase awareness of your game? Which, if any of these tactics, were effective?

The first way I increased awareness of my game was through the use of Twitter. I posted tweets throughout the development of the game, which really built up hype and also motivated me when working on it! I would highly recommend doing this and using #RobloxDev on Twitter. I found that the tweets that did best had either an image or a gif, but even a short update tweet can help increase awareness of the game. It’s also a good idea to come up with a unique hashtag for your game if you can!

Another useful marketing tactic was the use of YouTube. There are a number of Roblox YouTubers who are always looking to play new games. I contacted a few before I released my game and they had videos out pretty much the next day! These videos made a huge difference, and I noticed a difference in player count overnight since the first video of my game was released(especially with it being paid access); players wanted to check it out before buying. It is also important to note that there must be enough content for YouTubers to create a series, as they usually provided a more loyal player base than those who did one-off specials.

My game, which is a game development simulation game, allows you to purchase computers for employees to use. I contacted YouTubers and produced their very own laptop ‘skins’ with their logo on. Fans could use a code to redeem the skin, and this drove a lot of traffic to my game. I would highly recommend this form of marketing as it was definitely the most effective for me (plus, it’s a lot of fun watching people enjoy playing your game!)!

I don’t tend to change my game icons or thumbnails at a certain time; however, I usually update them for a large update or event. This informs players there is a big change in the game, and also means that you have a standard, recognised game icon the rest of the time, which helps with your games’ brand recognition.

What data points (if any) did you use to indicate the effectiveness of marketing your game?

The first place I check is developer stats; here you can clearly see player count and revenue and can almost immediately tell if your marketing is a success. I found the visit count was a good way to see the effectiveness of marketing. For example, I released a large update to my game and posted a tweet which made a lot of fans aware of the update who then went to try it out. This was the visit count:

The arrow shows where I released the update and posted the tweet. As you can see, it made a huge difference!

I also use GameAnalytics to track other information such as Retention, or the percentage of new players vs returning players. This is really useful because, for example, after running an ad, you can see how many new players actually played the game or whether it just attracted old, returning players. The retention also shows whether or not the recent update kept new players playing.

Do you have any tips or tricks to share with other developers on advertising their game or bidding on an ad?

When it comes to bidding on an ad, I personally recommend advertising mid-week. There are usually a lot less ads being run which increases the chance of your ad being shown! Another tip would be to advertise just before a holiday and combine this with an event. I made a Christmas event for my game and player counts increased massively. If you advertise just before a holiday or event, you will hopefully reach and maintain higher player counts for a lower bidding price, rather than having to bid more during holidays and compete with a lot of other ads. Another factor to consider is that Holiday seasons, although more expensive, tend to offer better revenue — especially near Christmas.

Help and Feedback Game Design Support

Hi, recently i got a problem. I spent all my robux on ads but it didn’t give me visits ( the last ads ends today). Now I have no more robux for advertising and I would like to ask how can I promote my game without robux?

thank you for your advice!

I was in same situation, I tried something by posting stuff here but, failed…
I think there is no way around it, you must have some money…

If there is way around it I will be happy to hear it.

Hey, Developer!

I suggest going on Discord Servers that allows advertisement, if not then I suggest advertising on Twitter or Youtube.

Hello lrlxxd, I would recommend spending some time on social media, make trailers, showcases, and similar things related to your game. Youtube, Instragam, even TikTok. Simply just advertise your game where it is allowed.

I wouldn’t recommend using much text to advertise, because many people, especially kids, will not bother reading it.

In simple words, Social Media

I’d say go with this one. I know for a fact that in the Hidden Developers Discord server and unofficial Roblox Discord server you can advertise in channels made specifically for promoting your game(s).

Hmmmm what i do is i get people with premium to play my game or if my friend has premium to afk in my game that way i have enough $$ to advertise.Other than that you would have to put up with word of mouth.Try messaged a youtuber or famous person to promote your game

Hey, man! If you don’t have any money to make ads, you can still do Discord Servers, Twitter, and YouTube! You could also make trailers, showcases, and more things that would be appealing. There are also many Discord Servers for advertising, so you can do that there. You can also ask YouTubers/Twitch Streamers (Not big ones, maybe friends, family, smaller Content Creators) to play your game in a video!

Make the game PAID ACCESS and invest like $10 into getting 1000 robux, and advertise 500 robux, you get 7 sales that is almost enough to advertise again and gain more attention to your game for organic growth. My advice.

I usually promote my game by creating a game trailer for YouTube.
