(Pocket-lint) - WhatsApp has long offered voice and video calls through its iPhone and Android apps, but the feature is also available on its desktop app. 

Making a voice or video call using WhatsApp's desktop app works in both portrait and landscape orientation, and appears in a resizeable standalone window on your computer so you have the freedom to move it around. It is also set to always be on top. 

Currently, the feature is only available for one-to-one calls, but WhatsApp has said it has plans to include group voice and video calls in the future. All voice and video calls on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted.

Here's how to make a voice or video call using WhatsApp desktop and what you need.

To make or receive a voice or video call using WhatsApp desktop, you will need the following:

• The latest version of the WhatsApp desktop app (available for Windows PC and Mac)
• An audio and microphone output device
• A camera for video calls
• An active internet connection on your phone and computer. Your phone needs to be online to establish the call, but the call won't go through your phone.
• Grant permission to WhatsApp desktop to access your computer's microphone and camera.

It's worth noting that WhatsApp Desktop calling is only supported on MacOS 10.13 and newer, and Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 and newer.

Follow these super easy steps to make a voice call using WhatsApp desktop. 

1. Open the WhatsApp desktop app on your computer
2. Scan the QR code using your phone (open WhatsApp on your phone > Tap Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device)
3. Open the individual chat with the person you want to make a call to
4. Click on the voice call icon
5. Tap on End Call when you're done

You can mute or unmute your microphone by clicking the microphone icon during the call. It's also possible to switch from a voice call to a video call during the call - more on that below.

To make a video call using WhatsApp desktop, follow the simple steps below:

1. Open the WhatsApp desktop app on your computer
2. Scan the QR code using your phone (open WhatsApp on your phone > Tap Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device)
3. Open the individual chat with the person you want to make a video call to
4. Tap on the Video call icon
5. Tap End Call when you're finished

As with voice calling, you can mute or unmute your microphone by clicking the microphone icon during the call. You can also turn your camera off by tapping on the camera icon during the call.

During a voice call with a contact, you can ask to switch to a video call, like you can with Apple's FaceTime for example. 

To switch between a voice call and a video call using WhatsApp desktop, follow the steps below:

1. Follow the steps above to start a voice call with a contact
2. During the call, hover over the Camera icon
3. Click on the camera icon
4. The contact you are talking to will then get the option to select OK or Switch to change the call to video, or Cancel to decline
5. If they select OK or Switch, the voice call will switch over to video

To make a call on the WhatsApp mobile app, go to the contact you wish to call. In the top right-hand corner, you’ll see icons for phone and video. Tap on the one you want to use. If this is the first time you’re making such a call, your phone will ask permission to access and use your camera and microphone.

The call will then start ringing. You can switch between audio and video calling at any time by tapping the video and audio icons. You can also mute yourself using the microphone icon.

On the desktop app, go to the contact you want to call. In the top right-hand corner, you’ll see phone and video icons. Click on the one you want to use. If this is the first time you’re using the call function, your computer will ask you for camera and microphone access.

Once you click either the phone icon or video icon, it will ring. Even if you chose the phone icon, you could easily switch to a video call by clicking the video icon on the far left. Clicking the microphone button will mute you.

Currently, WhatsApp Web does not have phone and video calls baked in.

How can I add an international number to WhatsApp?

How can I reduce the amount of internet data for each call?

On the mobile app, go to Settings—>Storage and Data. Toggle the option Use Less Data for Calls. This will lower the amount of data taken from your internet plan when you make WhatsApp phone calls. However, the downside is that the call quality may suffer slightly.

Does the international dialing code need to be added to each WhatsApp call?

Yes. For WhatsApp to know the origin of the country of the person you’re calling, it needs the country’s dialing code. If you don’t know the country code, you can look it up here. Note that, instead of the 0 at the start of the dialing code, you must instead type a +. You can accomplish this by holding down the 0 key on a mobile device.

Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?

WhatsApp calls are free of charge. The only real “cost” is the amount of data deducted from your monthly internet data plan. If you have an unlimited data plan, this is not an issue.
