Early Life

Robin René Roberts was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on November 23, 1960, and grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Roberts, the youngest of four siblings and the daughter of a Tuskegee Airmen pilot, spent her childhood cultivating athletic and academic success, graduating as salutatorian of her high school. Robin Roberts followed in the footsteps of her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts, who became a local news anchor, earning a journalism scholarship and a degree in communications from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Early Broadcast Career

Roberts used her unique combination of athletic talent and journalistic skill to become a sports reporter and anchor for a local TV station in Mississippi shortly after graduating from college. As her popularity and experience grew, she moved every year or two to a larger city in the South, from Hattiesburg to Biloxi to Nashville and then Atlanta.

ESPN to ‘Good Morning America’

At the age of 29, Roberts was hired by ESPN to host Sportscenter, the network’s flagship news program. She began appearing as a guest reporter on Good Morning America, a show broadcast by ABC, a sister network of ESPN, around the same time (both networks are owned by The Walt Disney Company).

After years of contributing to both ESPN and Good Morning America, ABC hired Roberts as a full-time co-anchor in 2005. When Diane Sawyer, then an anchor on Good Morning America, was named anchor of ABC World News, the network’s evening news program, Roberts and George Stephanopoulos co-anchored. Together, they helped propel the show to the top of the morning show ratings, unseating NBC’s Today show, which had held the top spot for more than a decade.

Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant

Roberts left Good Morning America in August 2012 to receive treatment for a rare blood disorder that developed as a result of the chemotherapy she received for breast cancer in 2007. In September, Roberts received a bone marrow transplant.

On the day she revealed on-air that she had myelodysplastic syndrome, the website for Be the Match, a nonprofit organization that maintains a national bone marrow donation registry, saw a 1,800% increase in donors. Roberts relied on her sister, Sally-Ann, who doctors said was an excellent match, rather than the registry. Nonetheless, Roberts promoted bone marrow donation through Be the Match and encouraged viewers to sign up.

Return to ‘GMA’

Roberts made her first appearance on Good Morning America since beginning treatment on February 20, 2013. Her emotional return and happy reunion with the Good Morning America staff was witnessed by the entire world. Roberts’ return to the air helped Good Morning America achieve its highest ratings since the morning after the presidential election in November 2012, when 6.1 million viewers tuned in. During the segment, she said, “I’ve been waiting 174 days to say this: Good morning, America!”

Along with Stephanopoulos and former football star Michael Strahan, Roberts remains a popular co-host on the show.

Books, Awards and Personal

Roberts is the author of several books, including From the Heart: 7 Rules for Living and Everyone’s Got Something.

Following her recovery, Roberts was presented with the prestigious Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPYs by basketball star LeBron James. She also received the Walter Cronkite Award for Journalism Excellence in 2014 and was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2016.

Roberts came out as a gay woman on Good Morning America in early January 2014. Prior to this announcement, she had not publicly discussed her sexual orientation. Following the news anchor’s revelation, the public was also treated to a photo of Roberts’ girlfriend, Amber Laign, on the show.
