What is the temperature of mixture if 10g of steam at 100 C is mixed with 50g of ice at 0 C?

5g of steam at 100C is mixed with 15g ice at 0C.The temperature of the mixture wiill be?

Here you should remember that steam and ice will first convert into liquid water at 100C and 0C respectively. Then they will form a mixture whose resultant temperature has been asked.

heat lost by steam = heat gained by ice
[5 * 2268] + [5 * 4.2 * (100 - t)] = [15 * 336] + [15 * 4.2 * (t - 0)]

{ here t is the final temperature of the mixture, 336 is the specific latent heat of melting for ice and 2268 is the specific latent heat of evaporation for steam }

5[ 2268 + 420 - 4.2t ] = 15[ 336 + 4.2t ] => 2688 - 4.2t = 1008 + 12.6t => 2688 - 1008 = 12.6t + 4.2t => 1680 = 16.8 => 1680/16.8 = t

=> 100 = t

Hence, the final temperature of the mixture is 100C.
