Who are Wynonna Judds parents?

Who are Wynonna Judds parents?

Wynonna Judd has a half-sister, actor Ashley Judd, but it turns out she also has a half-brother. After learning about her biological father's son, the singer recently called him up to meet — at least over the telephone.

Wynonna Judd was born Christina Claire Ciminella, and for years she thought her father was Michael Charles Ciminella, the biological father of her sister Ashley (birth name: Ashley Tyler Ciminella). However, Judd tells Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show, she learned in the early 1990s that her father was actually a man named Charles Jordan, the boyfriend of Judd's mother, Naomi Judd, who left after Naomi became pregnant with Wynonna.

"I found out about all of this ... when I was pregnant with Elijah [Judd, my son, who was born in 1994]," Judd explains of learning of her biological father's existence. "I was 30 years old and I found out, you know, part of my life that I thought, you know, this man who was my biological father is not. And it's Ashley's father ..."

More than 15 years later, Judd now knows more of her family's story: Jordan also fathered a son with a different woman. His name is Michael, she says, and he is 53 years old and lives in Kentucky. Judd, also a Kentucky native, is now 56, making the half-siblings about three years apart.

Judd tells Cohen that she met Michael "yesterday," in an interview that aired on Wednesday (Oct. 28). "I called him on his birthday and I said, 'Hi' ... and I have the recording, Andy, of me saying, 'Hi, uh, this is your sister,'" she recounts.

Judd does not share how she learned of Michael's existence, how he reacted to her phone call, or if the two made plans to speak further or meet up.

The country star never met her biological father. In a 2005 interview with Larry King, she explains that she had planned to meet him about a month before he died in 2000, but never got the chance.

Naomi Judd and Michael Ciminella divorced in 1972, leaving Naomi as a single mother to Wynonna and Ashley. She married her current husband, Larry Strickland, in 1989.

See the Judds Through the Years:

From the early 1980s to the 1990s, Wynonna Judd has been known as one half of the most popular and respected female country acts, The Judds. Together with her mother, Naomi Judd, the mother-and-daughter duo provided country music with a crucial contrast to their male peers like no one else.

However, The Judds soon parted ways after Wynonna’s mother experienced some health problems.

Following Naomi’s unexpected retirement, Wynonna set out to pursue a solo career. While she was first unsure of carrying on without her mother, she ended up showcasing a range that even more bewildered diehard country fans and radio programmers – at the same time, helped her retain a heaps of admiring followers.

Truly, Wynonna is one of a kind – a force of nature to be reckoned with. Get to know more about country star Wynonna Judd with these facts.

Born Christina Claire Ciminella on May 30, 1964, the country singer was the love child of Charles Jordan and Naomi Judd – who got pregnant at the age of seventeen and gave birth to Wynonna two weeks before her high school graduation ceremony.

2. She never met her biological father, which has been her biggest regret.

Sadly, Jordan didn’t want the responsibility of a child, so he abandoned Naomi and Wynonna. Eventually, Naomi married Michael Ciminella, who decided to raise baby Wynonna with him.

Wynonna was already thirty years old when she found out that Ciminella wasn’t her real father. She made arrangements to meet Jordan, but he died before they were able to do so.

3. She had an impoverished childhood.

Wynonna grew up in a mountain home where there was no phone or television, and as Naomi tried to make ends meet. The only entertainment they had was by listening to country music on the radio.

But it was on that mountain top that Wynonna learned to play the guitar. She and her mother ease the tension by harmonizing, singing at the back of their porch or around the fire after chores. Eventually, their family vocal chemistry made them one of the genre’s most successful duos, with many of The Judds songs hitting the charts.

4. She said she knew she was going to be a lead singer the minute she was born.

In an interview, Wynonna said she knew she could sing at the young age of three. “I just knew as a kid,” she said.

5. She got her name from a song.

Wynonna borrowed the name from Nat King Cole’s popular rhythm and blues song “Route 66,” which references an Arizona town called Winona.

6. She was once arrested for drunk driving.

In 2003, Wynonna was charged with drunken driving after a city police officer stopped her speeding vehicle close to Music Row. It was found out that her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, and she told the officer she didn’t remember how many drinks she had consumed during the celebration of her friend’s birthday.

Wynonna posted the standard bond for a first offense and was released.

7. She has a famous sister.

Wynonna’s half-sister, Ashley Judd, is an American actress whose career spans over three decades and has appeared in more than twenty films. Some of her renowned movies are Norma Jean & Marilyn, Double Jeopardy, and Natural Born Killers. She also earned a number of nominations, such as a Best Actress nomination from the Golden Globe Award.

8. She’s been married three times.

In 1995, Judd first married Nashville businessman Arch Kelley III. They then welcomed their children: son Elijah Judd and daughter Grace Pauline. However, the couple parted ways two years later.

Nearly five years after her divorce, the country singer found love again in the arms of her former bodyguard, D.R. Roach. The two married in 2003 until Roach was arrested for attempted sexual assault of a minor in 2007. Five days after his arrest, Wynonna – who found herself shocked and in disbelief – filed for divorce.

In 2009, Wynonna began a fairytale romance with fellow country singer Cactus Moser and finally got married in an intimate wedding three years later. The two have been inseparable ever since.

9. She’s a spokesperson for prison reform.

Wynonna’s daughter Grace Pauline Kelley had multiple run-ins with the law over her use and possession of illegal drugs. In 2018, she was sentenced to eight years in prison after she violated her drug probation.

Kelley’s case prompted Wynonna to work with the nonprofit Hope for Prisoners, which aims to help inmates re-join the community after they’re released. She even met White House officials to work on criminal justice reform.

10. She continued her mother-daughter tour alone following Naomi’s death.

Wynonna’s mother died by suicide in April 2022. After a lot of thought, Wynonna decided to tour by herself in her mother’s honor. She believed the decision would help her find peace.

Truly, Wynonna Judd is living quite an interesting life.

The Judd family has been in the public eye for many years, and their tragedies continue to attract a lot of attention. One grave misfortune was the discovery of a family secret.

Ashley Judd's mother, country singer Naomi Judd, died in April 2022 after taking her own life. The actress shared the tragic news with the public via her Instagram account.

She also went to ABC News to talk about the death of her mom with Diane Sawyer. Ashley read aloud a letter from her sister Wynonna who was not yet ready to speak publicly about their mom's death.

WHO IS CHARLES JORDAN?

While the sisters have the same mother, they learned much later in life that they have different fathers. It turned out that the man Wynonna thought was her dad for almost her entire life, Michael Ciminella, was, in fact, not biologically related to her at all.

Her biological dad was a man named Charles Jordan, an ex-boyfriend who left an 18-year-old Naomi when she was pregnant with Wynonna. The singer only discovered this information in 1993 when she was pregnant with her son Elijah at 30 years old, whom she shares with ex-husband Arch Kelley.

Sadly, she never managed to meet her biological father as he passed away a month before their planned meeting.

TACKLING FAMILY DEMONS

Besides Elijah, Wynonna also has a daughter, Grace, but they've had a strained relationship throughout the years. At one point in 2013, Ashley gained temporary custody of Grace.

Grace started using drugs as she got older and landed behind bars several times. In 2020, she was sentenced to eight years in prison for violating her probation for a previous drug-related case.

In 2021 she was released on parole on the condition that she takes part in substance abuse treatment and undergoes drug tests. A spokesperson for the Tennessee Board of Parole stated:

"The Board reached a final decision on April 22, 2021, recommending releasing her to parole supervision with post-release conditions."

Rather than shaming her daughter for her substance abuse, Wynonna publicly praised her for her strength and became passionate about criminal justice reform.

Like many others, the Judd family is plagued by demons: from suicide to drug abuse to family secrets. Ashley has opened up about incest and abuse in her tell-all memoir. The actress also spoke about her experience with depression.

On top of their inner turmoil, growing up under a single mother who was then paid a nurse's salary was challenging for the family. Before Naomi shot to fame, her children were said to have worn second-hand clothing and sometimes even gone without plumbing or electricity.

With the release of her book, Ashley has been able to find healing after using her memoir as a space for expression.

MUSIC IN HER VEINS

Wynonna also uses her art form to express herself and takes after her mother as a country singer. Through her melodies, she opens up about moments like finding out about her half-brother later in life. Music is how she processes her pain and connects with others. As she expressed:

"That's what country music is: stories about real life. I want to breathe life into the fans. I want to breathe life into people by singing from my toenails, that aching part of life and that joy part of life. And it's intertwined."

Ashley said that her mom felt that performing was like flying; she had a passion for music, just like her country artist daughter.

So, while Wynonna never connected with her biological father, she had a bond with her mom especially onstage, where they sang in harmony.

Wynonna and her late mom formed a musical duo, The Judds, and were signed with RCA Records. It marked the beginning of a musical career that her gifted mother inspired.
