Who is mary steenburgen married to

After 25 years of marriage, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen are still deeply in love with one another.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, Danson, 73, detailed how he and Steenburgen, 67, have made their marriage work after so many years together. The couple originally met on the set of their film Pontiac Moon in 1993, before they later tied the knot in 1995.

"I'm in love. We're in love. That handles a lot. We make each other laugh. I admire her," Danson told the outlet. "If I could be a woman, I'd want to be her."

"We delight in each other," the Mr. Mayor star added. "And we're pretty disciplined about being celebratory of what we have."

Back in October, Steenburgen and Danson celebrated their milestone anniversary together, where the actress gushed over her "dreamboat" husband in a tribute Instagram post.

In the photo caption, Steenburgen pointed out a slight gaffe in the couple's selfie: a "big ass piece of salad" in Danson's teeth, which she said couldn't thwart his "legendary beauty."

"Happy 25th Anniversary! This was SUPPOSED to be a sweet loving anniversary photo but you have a big piece of salad in your teeth. So there it is," Steenburgen wrote on the sweet Instagram snapshot. "Thank you for making me laugh today and every single one of the last 9,125 days. You are the goofiest, wisest, kindest, dreamboat in the world. True, that is a big ass piece of salad but even that doesn’t mar your legendary beauty."

"I can’t believe how lucky I am. Happy Anniversary, Ted. Love, Mary," she concluded the post.

Back in 2018, Steenburgen told PEOPLE that Danson’s small gestures mean the most to her in their relationship.

"He is just kind to me every single day," she said at the time. "If he has an early call, I try to get up while it’s still dark and make him coffee and send him off and he does the same for me. I think it’s those little kindnesses that completely make up our life that are so appreciated."

"I could care less about things like Valentine’s Day because literally the appreciation for what I do for him and the way he nurtures me as a woman, as an artist, as an actor, as a songwriter and his celebration of who I am makes me free to fly and be who I am," she added. "And I hope I do that for him."

The actress also noted that Danson keeps their romance alive years later by paying her sweet compliments on a daily basis. "He does tell me every single day of my life I’m beautiful, and I do know a lot of women live without that," Steenburgen said. "And it does matter, someone just telling you that."

After 25 years of marriage, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen know what it takes to make their relationship work.

Currently starring on NBC in Mr. Mayor and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist respectively, Danson, 73, and Steenburgen, 68, sat down with PEOPLE for one of this week's cover stories and opened up about their marriage.

"Everyone I've ever loved has taught me so much, but I feel like my life really began when I found him," says the actress. "I think love is just really listening to your heart."

They also shared some very simple rules when it comes to keeping the peace. "Just tell the truth. The only time I get really angry with Mary is when I'm wrong," says Danson. "But he's wrong a lot," teases Steenburgen. Adds the actor: "I am. It's only when you're being defensive or fearful that you get angry."

When it comes to dividing kitchen duties, Steenburgen insists she's the bigger cook. "But he makes lunches and breakfast much more than I do," she allows, prompting Danson to respond: "So we are going to have to go with me."

As for who's the first to want a date night, "I think me," says Danson. "We have a lot of date nights; we don't have dumb nights together."

Steenburgen laughs. "Are you kidding? We watch dumb crap on TV all the time."

If they ever disagree, Danson says he's the first to apologize. "But 'stop being mad' is usually the first five minutes of my apology," he adds, smiling.

The couple, whose romance blossomed after costarring in the 1993 film Pontiac Moon, insists the last 25 years have only been filled with gratitude.

"If you keep being grateful for your life, your heart gets bigger. The bigger your heart, the more you get to love," says the actor. "Part of being human is to experience loving and being loved. I have that every day. When that kind of circle of love and being loved gets going, it's truly divine."

The love story that has spanned a 25-year marriage between actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen didn't exactly get off to a flying start the first time they met each other.

Danson, 73, and Steenburgen, 68, recalled to People how they first met during auditions for the 1983 movie "Cross Creek," when Danson didn't get the part of Steenburgen's husband in the film.

"Which is a miracle, because man, I was a hot mess back then," Danson told the magazine for the cover story of the Feb. 22 issue.

Considering both of them were married at the time, Steenburgen said it was "not our moment."

Ten years later, they were both divorced when they were cast in the 1993 movie "Pontiac Moon." However, they were still in a place where they weren't seeking to get involved.

"We both said the same phrase to ourselves, which was: 'Obviously we cannot be in a relationship,'" Danson said. "I could ruin anything. I'm not relationship material."

Danson had been divorced twice by that point, while Steenburgen had divorced Malcolm McDowell, with whom she has two children, in 1990.

"I wasn't ready for anything like a relationship," she said. "We just kept working together and becoming better and better friends."

They eventually fell in love and got married in 1995, which has stood the test of time. They celebrated their 25th anniversary in October in signature style, with Steenburgen posting a smiling photo of them on Instagram in which Danson has a big piece of salad stuck in his teeth.

"Thank you for making me laugh today and every single one of the last 9,125 days," she wrote. "You are the goofiest, wisest, kindest, dreamboat in the world."

The couple are also still getting laughs as the stars of a pair of NBC shows, Danson on "Mr. Mayor" and Steenburgen on "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist."

"I want as long as possible in my life with Mary," Danson told People. "I know it will have all of its hard parts, but I want to experience love in all those moments."
