Stop elevating sociopathy.

Netflix paid Anna Sorokin, the German scammer at the heart of this series, $320,000 for the rights to her story. Sorokin used the money to pay back some of the funds she had stolen from banks, and some of the fines she owed the State of New York. Then she got on every talk show and new excerpt she could to keep building her fame.As of this writing, she is awaiting deportation back to Germany, but is currently sick with COVID. ICE believes she contracted COVID so that she could stay in the US longer, because, after all, Anna is a con artist. And, just so that we all understand how sociopathy and Hollywood works, the banks were repaid with Anna's story rights. The ordinary human beings whose credit cards and bank accounts she use are still out of money. Despite NY's Son of Sam law, Anna is profiting from her crimes by becoming an antihero through this story written by Shonda Rimes. When we watch this film, we are helping a sociopath profit.Grifters grift.Julia Garner does a great job as Anna, although her voice made me want to shoot the TV. Shonda gives us an engaging script. But what's the difference in this an making a movie of OJ's "If I DID IT?" The degree of crime?I didn't like the idea of elevating a grifter, and I especially didn't like the built in idea that her thefts were okay because she only stole from rich people. She didn't.

She wasn't Robin Hood. She was just a thief.

Who is Rachel DeLoache Williams in Inventing Anna season 1?

A Vanity Fair picture researcher, Rachel starts the series as one of Anna’s friends and enjoys the lifestyle that Anna brings. Although, by the end of Inventing Anna, she is no longer friends with Anna, with other characters such as Neff and Kacy turning their backs on Rachel.

As Rachel has to front a bill for $62,000 for an all-expenses-paid trip to Morocco, she plays a big part in Anna’s arrest. And, subsequently, her trial. Whilst she claims to love Anna, many, including Neff and Scott, question Rachel’s claims. Scott would later go on to prove that Rachel gained more than she lost from meeting Anna.

What does Rachel DeLoache Williams do?

After forming a friendship with Anna, Rachel and her boyfriend Noah go on a trip to Morocco with her. The “all-expenses-paid” trip initially starts well. But, when Anna is unable to pay, Rachel uses her card as a “hold” to ensure they’re not arrested. With growing tensions at La Mamounia continuing, Anna claims that she is unwell, and both she and Noah leave Anna alone in Morocco.

Once Rachel is back in America, her cards get maxed out. Even worse, a charge appears on her Vanity Fair card. Subsequently, she begs Anna to wire her the money. When Anna only sends her $5,000, Noah suggests going to the authorities. But Rachel is reluctant at first, due to “Trump’s America”. Eventually, Rachel manages to contact Anna, who claims she will hand her a check. Rachel goes to meet Anna at her hotel, but once there, she finds Anna has fled. At the hotel, a member of staff hints that Anna owes the hotel money as well.

As Rachel is in debt and could potentially lose her job, she is part of a sting operation against Anna. When the case gains the interest of journalist Vivian, she desperately tries to contact Rachel. Rachel, however, has no social media presence, and since she has already sold her story to Vanity Fair and painted herself as the victim, Rachel continues to ghost Vivian.

When Anna’s trial reaches the media’s attention, Rachel only has Kacy by her side. However, after Rachel speaks at the stand, her image of a “victim” falls into tatters. Anna’s lawyer, Scott, exposes Rachel for getting $630,000 in book deals due to her “friendship” with Anna. He goes on to claim that she “found, friended, and turned Anna into the police”, with Rachel using the opportunity to advance her career as a writer.

In the conclusion of Inventing Anna, Anna is found not guilty of theft towards Rachel. In the aftermath of the trial, Kacy ends her friendship with Rachel, saying she wants to cut out any “pain in the a*s clients”. Rachel would go on to write “My Friend Anna”, which got voted one of Times Mag 100 best books of 2019.

Who is Todd Spodek in Inventing Anna season 1?

Todd Spodek is Anna’s lawyer. He has said that his aim during the trial was to convince the jury that Anna’s attempt to steal/con people out of their money was too incapable/incompetent for there to be any reason for Anna to get punished.

Due to Anna’s crazy and aloof personality, she soon drives Todd crazy, even to the point that he avoids her (many) calls. The tension between him and Anna peaks during the trial when it appears that Anna is more interested in creating a fashion show than the trial itself. As the trial takes over his life, he has many arguments with his wife. His wife, Margaret, feels that he pays more attention to Anna than his family.

What does Todd Spodek do?

Once Anna gets arrested for her crimes, she hires Todd as her lawyer. (Although, at first, Anna believes that his past client was Alec Baldwin and not his stalker Genevieve Sabourin). With Todd at the front and center of the trial, it doesn’t take long before he meets journalist Vivian. And with very little to work with, he purposely leaves his desk unattended. Which allows Vivian to start research into Anna.

During the trial, he maintains his argument that Anna didn’t commit a crime. Instead, Todd says that those who spent money on Anna did so because they wanted the lifestyle. With people wanting to believe that Anna was an heiress, he argues that those who fell for the lie did so because they weren’t doing their jobs properly. In the process, he manages to “shade” a number of individuals, such as David Morrison. However, none more so than Rachel DeLoache Williams. Rachel, who is very much trying to appear like the victim during the trial, gets exposed by Todd for selling her “traumatic experience” to three separate people to the sum of $630,000.

With Anna’s trial going on longer than expected, it causes friction between him and his wife when it ruins their only vacation of the year. Ultimately, when Anna gets found guilty for eight out of ten charges he still decides to stay with Anna. Whilst it was a loss for Anna, Todd still managed to win two of the big charges (Rachel and City National). As a result, Todd becomes the defender of choice for fraudsters. Although in 2019, after a health scare, he decides to spend more time with his family and finally takes a vacation.

Who is Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna season 1?

Originally born Anna Sorokin, she’s a Russian-born German who traveled to New York in 2013. Although she claims that “Delvey” is her mothers maiden name, her family have gone on to claim that they have no idea where she got the name from. With a lack of closeness towards her family, Anna claims that in an effort to escape her father she has become just like him. Whilst her mother says that “Anna was a stranger under the roof”.

Clearly a very ambitious individual, Anna created a business plan, and through her “image”, pulled in a group of advisors and made up a dream team to begin work at 281 Park Avenue. But with her ambition, came lies. Her true persona still remains very much up for debate, as opinions on her vary. From Vivian to Rachel, very few seem to share the same opinion on Anna.

What does Anna Delvey do?

After her crimes come to light, Anna gets arrested as part of a sting operation and, as a result, resides in Rikers Island at the beginning of Inventing Anna. Not wanting to be a dumb socialite, Anna rejects a plea deal, even though it means that if she loses the trial, she may face a sentence of up to 15 years.

Whilst she awaits the trial, her case gains the interest of journalist Vivian. (A a features writer at Manhatten Magazine). Throughout Inventing Anna, Vivian researches Anna, and learns several details about the life Anna lived as a fake heiress.

Anna lied her way to living the high life, staying in hotels without payment, and spending lavishly. Ultimately, her life starts to crumble, and as friends start to abandon her, hotels throw her out, and a bench warrant gets issued for Anna. After a brief stay in L.A, where Anna “collapses” as a way to extend her visa, Anna finally gets arrested, and the trial proceedings begin.

Protective of her image, Anna delays the trial twice due to a wardrobe issue and even threatens to fire her lawyer, Todd, if he does not find her better clothes. Eventually, after a media frenzy towards the trial, Anna gets found guilty on eight out of ten charges. (Anna still won two of the big charges). Regardless, she gets sentenced to four to twelve years at Bedford Hills. In the closing moments, and before she goes to Bedford Hills, Anna asks Vivian to come to visit her. The credits reveal that Anna got released from prison on the 11th of February 2021. Although, just a month later, she was taken into custody by ICE for overstaying her visa.

Who is Vivian in Inventing Anna season 1?

A features writer at Manhatten Magazine, Vivian is based on the real-life journalist Jessica Pressler, and it is Pressler’s article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” that forms the basis of Inventing Anna. And as such, it is also the article that brought Anna’s case to the general public. Unhappy with her career, Vivian develops a borderline obsession with Anna as she attempts to uncover who exactly Anna Delvey is.

What does Vivian do?

After Vivian visits Anna as she awaits trial, Vivian researches Anna and her past. She reaches out to and interviews many individuals, such as Chase, Val, and Neff. With determination to finish the article (and with the added pressures of deadlines and fact-checks), Vivian works until her waters break. Her efforts pay off as the article into Anna becomes the best piece for the fictional publication in five years.

Even so, Vivian feels that the real story isn’t being seen, much to her dismay. And so, she informs her superiors that she knows exactly what her next piece will be about. With the focus of the article still on Anna, Vivian travels to Germany to meet up with Anna’s parents. Before long, she tracks down Anna’s parents. But after she interviews them, she decides to scrap the article, as she feels that its contents/statements will hurt Anna’s feelings.

Once Vivian returns from Germany, she finds a letter from Anna’s father. Inside are Anna’s hospital records, and Vivian realizes that Anna made herself pass out, and then went on to claim that her father was an abusive alcoholic. The reason? In an attempt to get herself into rehab. This would therefore pause her visa, which was about to expire.

When the trial finishes and Anna receives her sentence, Vivian gets her own work office. In the final episode, Vivian visits Anna in Rikers Island one last time. In the credits of Inventing Anna, viewers learn that Vivian is based on Jessica Pressler, and is one of the few characters in Inventing Anna that isn’t based entirely on a real individual. As for Pressler, she has written for GQ, Elle, and Esquire. Additional articles that Pressler wrote include “The Hustlers at Scores”, which got adapted into Hustlers (2019), and an article in which Pressler and “New York” publications were duped into believing that a High School senior has made $72 million by trading stocks.

This article, ”how did Anna Delvey gain the money,” contains spoilers regarding Netflix’s Inventing Anna season 1.

Read the review of season 1.

In the Netflix limited series Inventing Anna, Anna Delvey went under the pretense that she was a wealthy German heiress whilst living a life of luxury that she couldn’t afford. In summary, Anna has defrauded banks, hoteliers, and friends out of hundreds of thousands in American dollars. Eventually (four years are arriving in America), Anna’s crimes caught up with her. And she got arrested and subsequently convicted as a fraudster.

But, how exactly did Anna manage to con her way through life as an heiress between 2014-2017?

How did Anna Delvey retrieve the money in Inventing Anna season 1?

Part of the reason Anna Delvey was able to gain access to such high amounts of money was purely through her image/reputation. By pretending to be a wealthy individual, many individuals were tricked into fronting the bill Anna had originally meant to pay for. As Anna socialized in the circles of the “New York elite” there were very few reasons to doubt Anna was who she said she was.

Her image as “Anna Delvey” heightens by her proposal of “Anna Delvey Foundation”. What she claims could be a private members club seems to add more belief to the image of “Anna Delvey”. In this image/plan, she creates a business plan that people want to be a part of. But it wasn’t just rich individuals that Anna could fool; she also tricks banks, namely Fortress Investment Group.

By providing the bank with fake bank statements with the intention to make a loan application for $22 million, she eventually ended up with an overdraft of $100,000. She further gained extra funds by taking in $160,000 worth of fraudulent checks. Of which she would be able to withdraw $70,000.

In Inventing Anna, the biggest case of how Anna was able to con money out of people came from a trip to Morocco. During the trip (which Anna invited Kacy and Rachel along), she promised her friends an all-expenses-paid trip. In reality, Anna was unable to pay for the $62,000 bill. And so, Anna managed to convince Rachel to pay for the bill with the promise that she would repay her.

Ultimately, despite living a “high life”, Anna actually rarely had the funds. And in many instances, it was her image or handouts that supported the lifestyle she had been living.
