Why are aniplex dvds so expensive?
Don't you agree Aniplex prices are too expensive?

Aniplex easily releases Blu-rays and DVDs at the highest prices. FUNimation normally prices 13 episode sets for about $30 and eventually get price drops. Viz Media basically does the same thing. The only other company that prices sets higher than that is Sentai Filmworks, at $40. Which is still reasonable, it may sound expensive to some but when you compare it to a new season of Game of Thrones on release date it costs just as much. But with Aniplex they charge almost the same as Japanese prices. Here is how much Blu-rays by them cost. Sword Art Online with 7 episodes $90 Blue Exorcist episodes 1-12 $140 Kill la Kill 4 episodes $60 Bakemonogatari all 15 episodes $120 Gurren Lagann limited edition with like 25 episodes $700

And the list goes on and on. I'm sure it's the Japanese Aniplex telling the American Aniplex to charge these prices, but they treat anime like it's still a premium when it's not, I mean look at shows like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online (which they own) that are EXTREMELY popular here. They don't understand that America and Japan have completely different economies. I'm lucky because the only show they have that I'd like to buy is Blue Exorcist, but I won't pay that much. Anyway do you agree with me on this?

I try telling the blokes on the Blu Ray forum about this and they keep laughing me off or telling me I’m an idiot. $50 for three episodes and a fancy box is not a good deal. What’s worse is they know they can get away with this behavior because of Netflix catering to poor people and influencing others to buy their overpriced sets.I love a lot of their anime like FMA and Black Butler I even have some Funi sets of them, but unless Rightstuf gives them a steep sale they’re never getting a scent out of me barring streaming services. Now that they own Bleach things are only going to get worse.

They just follow the Japanese pricing model: series are often released with two or three episodes per disc at the equivalent of $80 a pop. It is outrageously overpriced though. The collectibles they put in their sets are very high quality, but I wish they would release a bare bones set alongside them. I've wanted to buy Blend S for a long time, but $100 for a single season with no dub is just too much even if it comes with a nice booklet (that I will look at exactly once and never again). Sidenote, one of my friends complains that Funimation price their sets at around $40'-50 per cour. Drives me crazy. Back in the day, we paid $30 for single volume releases of an anime. I have a foot and a half tall stack of Kyo Kara Maoh DVDs that I paid well over $100 for as a teen. I can get that same thing on a single bluray set for like $40 now. I will gladly accept $50 for an entire season of a new show in comparison.

Seeing how anime lie Sarazanmai are released 2 episodes at a time for $70 each makes me sick.

In Japan, pretty much only the diehard otaku buy the DVDs/Blu-rays. They price them so high because they know their market is, generally, only a few thousand people that are always going to buy it. Hopefully Sarazanmai won't be terribly expensive since Funimation licensed it here.

Yes but Aniplex is the Japanese distributor... and you’re saying that like marketing a show about duck turtles that suck out balls from your a****** will be easy...

I do think we have a nice spectrum of prices.Aniplex is on the high end with their $140 dollar sets with all the bells and whistles. Sentai Filmworks is kind of on the low end with bare bones $35 sets (and they have that amazing Black Friday sale every year where you can get shows for like $8/season). Funimation and Viz are in the middle.

Don’t justify the bells and whistles. Nobody actually cares about their toys and fancy boxes. And who watches extras anyway?

Whales.Like, it's a self-selection thing. If you overprice your products, only diehards will buy it, and those diehards want bells and whistles, and you use those bells and whistles to justify your overpricing, and it just feeds into itself.

Is this finally a conundrum that CAN'T be solved by helicopter theft?
