Why was the white sox game postponed

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago White Sox game against the Cleveland Guardians Wednesday afternoon was postponed due to COVID cases among the Guardians.Disappointed Sox fans left Guaranteed Rate Field after COVID forced a last-minute cancellation of the final game in a three-game series.Several fans had already made their way to their seats when the announcement was made."They announced it throughout the stadium, they put it up on the big board," fan Joe Carbonara said."She was having a great time, she got her Dippin' Dots, she was ready to go," fan Ozzie Rivero said. "Then they made the announcement.""I feel like they could have alerted us a little bit earlier, so we could know about this," fan Cassidy Winston said. The first Major League Baseball game of the season to be postponed due to COVID followed a positive test from Guardians manager Terry Francona and several others in the Cleveland organization.Francona was in the dugout Tuesday night when the Sox beat the Guardians.Cancellations and rising case numbers do not come as a shock to doctors ever since mandates were lifted."If people are trying to live life the way it was pre- COVID, I'm not surprised numbers are going up," said Dr. Shikha Jain, UI Health, "and they will continue to go up and we will see problems with our workforce."But, many Sox fans are not ready to return to mask mandates."No, because it was the Guardians that fell to us this time," Carbonara said. "We are apparently doing the right things here, Cleveland better check their mask mandates."

And with COVID still circulating, doctors said Wednesday's game may be the first, but likely not the last to be canceled this season. MLB has yet to set a date for the game to be rescheduled.

CHICAGO — As it did a few times during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, COVID-19 has forced the postponement of a baseball game here in Chicago.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced that the White Sox game against the Guardians scheduled for 1:10 PM at Guaranteed Rate Field has been postponed due to multiple positive tests for the virus on Cleveland’s team.

The move was made to allow for further testing and contact tracing for the Guardians.

A make-up date has yet to be set for the postponement as the White Sox have had their first game called off due to the virus in 2022.

This was scheduled to be the third and final game of the series between the two teams with this contest part of a seven-game homestand for the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. On Thursday, the team starts a four-game series with the New York Yankees.

The sun was shining for much of the day, but the damage had already been done. Sunday's game between the Guardians and Chicago White Sox was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

A good deal of standing water formed on the warning track in left field, and with more rain on the way later in the day the field wasn't able to drain fast enough to create a window to play the game. Cleveland was hit hard with a steady rain Saturday night, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon.

Guardians manager Terry Francona and White Sox manager Tony La Russa twice met with the umpires in left field to evaluate the field conditions. After nearly a three-hour delay from when the first pitch was originally scheduled, the game was postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 15, a mutual off day for both clubs.

Fans holding tickets to Sunday's game can exchange them for tickets to one of 22 future game options. The exchange can be made at CLEGuardians.com/mytickets. Tickets must be exchanged by noon Sept. 15.

For the first time during the 2022 season, a game has been postponed because of a COVID-19 cluster. The scheduled Wednesday afternoon game between the Guardians and White Sox has been postponed because of positive tests within the Cleveland roster.

Here's the full statement from MLB:

Following multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the Cleveland Guardians organization, their afternoon road game today vs. the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field has been postponed to allow for continued testing and contact tracing. Major League Baseball will provide a rescheduling update when it becomes available.

According to MLB's Mandy Bell, longtime Cleveland manager Terry Francona and bench coach DeMarlo Hale were among those to test positive, along with "other uniform personnel and some traveling support staff."

A number of teams have dealt with positive tests this season and endured some level of roster upheaval, but until Wednesday the schedule had not been altered by COVID. Of note is that the 2022 schedule is already compressed because of the owner lockout that spanned much of the offseason and pushed back Opening Day roughly a week.

MLB has dealt with COVID-related disruptions since the spring of 2020. Spring training of 2020 was interrupted at the pandemic widened, and the regular season was eventually abbreviated to 60 games. In 2021, travel and ballpark-capacity restrictions because of COVID also rendered the season something less than normal.

The hope of course is that what happened Wednesday in Chicago is not the first of many cancellations. If that scenario is realized, then MLB could see the return of more strict protocols.

CLEVELAND — Sunday’s series finale between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians was postponed because of unplayable field conditions at Progressive Field, the Guardians announced.

It rained for portions of the morning in the area. A rescheduled date was not immediately announced.

The third-place Sox are 2½ games behind the first-place Guardians in the American League Central.

The teams split the shortened weekend series. The Guardians won 5-2 Friday behind 14 strikeouts from starter Triston McKenzie. The Sox won 2-0 Saturday behind 8⅔ stellar innings from Johnny Cueto.

The Sox travel to Kansas City, Mo., for one game against the Royals on Monday at Kauffman Stadium, then go to Baltimore for a three-game series against the Orioles beginning Tuesday.

Michael Kopech is slated to start for the Sox on Monday. Dylan Cease, who was scheduled for Sunday, will start Tuesday in Baltimore. Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn are the probable Sox pitchers for Wednesday and Thursday.
