What Does Red Light Mean On Oculus?

A few people I know have faced an issue with the Oculus headset where they were having issues with the red light blinking. Whenever their Oculus was blinking red, they would connect the charger but the red light wouldn’t go away.

He solved his issue by switching out the charger but if you face a similar problem, I recommend you update your Oculus firmware manually. There could be a few overlooked bugs that would cause inconsistencies like this.

However, the simplest thing to do is charge the Quest 2 for at least a day even if you don’t see a green light. Once it’s charged, you shouldn’t be able to see any blinking red lights anymore.

How To Fix Oculus Quest 2 Not Turning On?

You came here because your Oculus Quest 2 was having issues powering on. There’s a couple of fixes for this depending on whether your Oculus VR headset is actually damaged or if it’s just having a bug or it’s out of charge.

Keep in mind that if none of these fixes work for you, you might be having issues with the hardware on your Oculus. In that case, you should see about getting a replacement after taking the warranty status into account.

Here are the methods to fix Oculus Quest 2 not turning on:

1. Plug In The Charger

Before you go and start wondering if your Oculus headset is damaged, try connecting the charger first. This doesn’t mean plug it in for a few seconds and then see if it turns on.

What I mean is charge your Oculus headset for around 2.5 hours at least and see if you can power on the device after that. You should especially do this if you see a red light blinking on your headset.

Also, make sure that your Oculus Quest 2 is actually charging when you leave it plugged in. If you don’t see an orange light when you connect the charger, try getting a different one.

Another point to consider is that your Oculus device might be updating itself and this typically takes some time so you should plug it in and leave it for a while.

It’s recommended to plug it in because there can be major issues if it loses power while it’s updating.

2. Clean The Proximity Sensor

If you don’t know what a proximity sensor is, it’s a sensor that detects if an object is close to the sensor. Typically, the screen would turn off if it detected that something is close.

If you haven’t dusted your VR in a while, it could be that the dirt could have triggered the proximity sensor and, as a result, the screen is off. You can find the proximity sensor above the bridge of the nose.

You can use anything to clean it but I suggest using a clean microfibre cloth. After it’s done, you need to cover up the sensor and then check whether the screen starts to work now.

3. Perform A Soft Reset

A soft reset will basically clear up the temporary files and memory and restart the Oculus Quest 2. Don’t worry, all your installed apps and files will stay exactly how it was.

It is quite simple to do a soft reset. All you need to do is simply press and hold the power button on the Oculus VR headset for around 10 seconds. If this didn’t work for you, move on to the next fix.

All you have to do is go through our latest how to Clean VR Headset Foam.

The bootloader in the Oculus Quest 2 has a similar function like the bootloaders in our phones. It helps to resolve boot issues easily.

To reach the bootloader, you need to replicate these steps:

  1. Press and hold both the Volume down and power buttons for at least ten seconds.
  2. You should see a menu with a few options. Use the Volume up and down buttons to navigate and select Boot device option.
  3. Press the power button to start the boot up process.

If it worked, your Oculus screen should be booting normally.

5. Perform A Factory Reset

This should be your last resort, because you will lose all your data and settings, unlike the soft reset. There is a very good chance of this working if a failed update or software bug is stopping your Oculus Quest 2 from turning on.

There are actually two ways to do this and I will show you both of those methods.

Here’s how you can do a factory reset using the Oculus app:

  1. Launch the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Touch the Settings option at the bottom.
  3. Locate the Oculus headset that is connected and tap it.
  4. On the next page, tap the More Settings option.
  5. Look for the Factory Reset option here and tap on it. It might ask for a confirmation so just press Reset.

If you want to format the headset without using your phone, you need to launch the bootloader. Here are the steps:

  1. Hold both the power and volume down buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader.
  2. Using the volume down button, navigate to the Factory Reset option.
  3. Press the Power button and then highlight Yes on the confirmation. Complete the confirmation by pressing the power button.
