On June 14, 2021, Community Home Medical Equipment was notified by Philips Respironics of a recall on some of their PAP devices and ventilators. We understand your concern. Community Home Medical Equipment received notification the same time that patients did and we are working on a response plan. The only information we have to share at this time is below, taken from the Respironics website. Please also see the linked message from Community Sleep Medicine Care. Philips Respironics announced a voluntary recall for Continuous and Non-Continuous Ventilators (certain CPAP, Bi-level PAP and Ventilator Devices) due to two issues related to the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam used in these devices: 1) PE-PUR foam may degrade into particles which may enter the device’s air pathway and be ingested or inhaled by the user, and 2) the PE-PUR foam may off-gas certain chemicals. The foam degradation may be exacerbated by use of unapproved cleaning methods, such as ozone (see FDA safety communication on use of ozone cleaners), and off-gassing may occur during initial operation and may possibly continue throughout the device’s useful life. There is a worldwide shortage of PAP machines and we do not have capacity at this time to replace machines. We are waiting for word from the manufacturer as to what the fix will be. The manufacturer has indicated they will reach out to patients when a solution becomes available. We apologize that we do not have more information at this time.
