Our documentary ‘What’s your why?’ went through quite a hectic journey before it was entered into the ‘Rock the boat film festival’. It initially began as a project for our English ATAR class in which we were assigned the task of creating an original documentary about a topic of our choice. A task which we sooned realised was not at all easy and so began the very long process of finding the right topic. We sat in class after class trying to come up with a topic which would not only be interesting, but would capture the attention of our audience, Year 11 ATAR students. It was only after much time, thought and procrastination that we came up with our topic - the impact of motivation on how well you do in ATAR. We believed that this would be a good topic to explore being ATAR students ourselves, who’ve had to sit through a great deal of assemblies that attempt to teach us the art of being successful in ATAR. We thought it would be good to gain our own insight on the life of kids like us and what truly impacts their journeys to success. So the creation of the documentary began. After planning, interviewing, filming and lots and lots of editing it was finally ready for submission. We handed in our assessment which also involved a ‘documentary competition’ called K-fest. Our whole Year 11 English ATAR group watched the top three documentaries from all the classes, which a panel of teachers judged to find three winners. In the end we won best cinematography and like in any good competition, we won a jar of lollipops. We thought the journey had come to an end and all that was left was to wait in anticipation for our result. However, our great teacher Mr Lightly had planned otherwise. He told us how he’d really enjoyed the documentary and wanted to enter it into a competition outside of school called the ‘Rock the Boat Film Festival’. At first we thought it to be a quite hilarious joke, but it turns out it wasn’t, and so the journey continued. Mr. Lightly submitted our documentary to the festival, and we were selected to show our films on the big screen at the local cinema. After the screening we were selected as the finalists in our category and will be attending the Rock The Boat Gala Night this Saturday, where the winners will be announced. So there you have it. That’s the story of the documentary, which was originally going to be about a missing cat and then became something none of us had expected. By Year 11 ATAR Students Mia, Gabrielle and Chiara We would like to congratulate Year 11 students Mia, Gabrielle, Chiara, Maria and Poppy, and Year 9 students Owen and Tiana, who were not only selected to show their short films at the local 'Rock The Boat Film Festival', but also made it into the finals with their films ‘Kids in Crime’, ‘What’s your Why’ and ‘Technology Rocks the Boat’. The hard work of these future filmmakers definitely paid off and we hope their masterpieces are chosen as the winners of the inaugural film festival tomorrow night. These students will now have the opportunity to walk the red carpet, Paparazzi and all, and enjoy a lavish Gala night where their short film will be shown once again on the big screen before the jury announces the winner of their respective category. If you would like to join them on the red carpet and the Gala night afterwards, at the Gary Holland Community Centre on Saturday 5 November at 6:30pm, get your tickets now. Good luck, Guys!
