GAME NOTES

• Ohio State has lost consecutive games for the first time all season entering Thursday’s matchup. The Buckeyes fell at Maryland by 15 on Sunday then lost at home to Nebraska on Tuesday. Both teams are below .500 in Big Ten play.

• Buckeyes junior forward E.J. Liddell is the only player in college basketball averaging at least 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.5 assists per game. Only two college basketball players since 1993 have averaged those numbers over the course of a season.

• Michigan State starting point guard A.J. Hoggard came off the bench on Tuesday against Michigan and played just 11 minutes due to illness.

• Buckeyes sophomore forward Zed Key missed his team’s Tuesday game against Nebraska due to an ankle injury and forward Kyle Young played just eight minutes and left the game due to illness.

• Tom Izzo needs one more win to pass Bob Knight for the most overall wins as the head coach at a Big Ten school.

PRE-GAME LINKS

Michigan State’s topsy-turvy season takes another dip with loss at Michigan

Michigan’s first true “must win” game of the season might not come until its Big Ten Tournament opener on Thursday. But winning Sunday’s game at Ohio State would go a long way towards an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Wolverines wrap the regular season in Columbus. The bad news is they already lost at home to the Buckeyes, 68-57, on Feb. 12. E.J. Liddell torched Michigan for 28 points that evening, and Michigan shot just 4-of-17 from 3. Juwan Howard didn’t like the foul discrepancy in that game, let the officials know it, and drew a technical in the final minute. Howard will miss Sunday’s game as he wraps up his suspension.

The good news for the Wolverines is that they have bounced back from their last six losses, all the way back to Jan. 14, with a victory. And Michigan did lose last time out, 82-71 at home against Iowa on Thursday. Ohio State pounded Michigan State that same night, 80-69, to end a two-game skid.

Michigan will either be the 7 seed or the 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. The 8 plays the 9, with the winner facing the 1 seed in the quarterfinals. The 7 plays the 10 with the winner facing the 2. Some combination of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Purdue will occupy the top two seeds.

Michigan will get the 7 seed with a win and a loss by either Michigan State (which hosts Maryland) or Rutgers (which hosts Penn State).

Those aforementioned teams also play on Sunday, with Rutgers-Penn State tipping at noon and Michigan State-Maryland starting at 4:30.

Sunday is Senior Day for the Buckeyes, with the ceremony starting at 12:20.
