Aim of the Game

In The Pocky Game, a player’s goal is to be the one who doesn’t flinch away from the Pocky stick. This is a highly intimate icebreaker game between 2 players each time, but you’ll be guaranteed a lot of laughs while you’re at it.

Age and Group sizes

The Pocky Game is ideally played between 2 players who are comfortable enough to be intimate with each other. If you have larger groups of friends at a party, you can opt to separate everyone into teams and send out a volunteer from each side for every round. The game is best played by guests above the age of 21 due to alcohol restrictions.

Preparation and Needed Materials

To play The Pocky Game, you’ll first have to prepare a box or two of Pocky biscuits. If you’re finding it difficult to source for Pocky biscuits, you can also substitute it for any long biscuits that resemble a Pocky stick or opt for cooked pasta instead.

If you’d like to play the drinking variation of this game, you will also have to prepare some drinks ahead of time.

Guide to playing The Pocky Game

Before you begin the game, you’ll first have to separate the group into 2 teams. Be sure to explain to the players that The Pocky Game is a close contact game and ensure that everyone feels comfortable with their opponents.

Step 1: Begin by choosing 2 players to face each other at an arm’s length. You may choose to place a table between them so they can hold onto the table for stability. Then, provide the players with a single Pocky stick.

Step 2: The players will each bite into either side of the Pocky stick. When the host says, “Go!” both players much slowly nibble into the Pocky stick simultaneously, reaching into the middle of the biscuit.

Step 3: As the biscuit shortens, the players will be forced to face each other. The first player who lets the Pocky stick go will lose the game and must take a drink. If there are more than 2 players, be sure to separate everyone into teams and switch the players each time someone loses.

Different ways to play The Pocky Game

To make The Pocky Game extra fun, you can always start the game with a shorter stick of biscuit. Instead of nibbling, both players must stare at each other while the remaining group tries to make either party laugh.

The first player that lets go of the Pocky stick will lose the round and must take a drink. This is often difficult to play as your players will find the situation of staring at each other to be funny, so laughing will become inevitable as the game proceeds.

Our updated version is sort of a mix between spin the bottle, and that scene from Lady and the Tramp where they’re eating the spaghetti.

What is a pocky game

The Pocky Game is a Japanese game where two players gnaw at the two ends of a Pocky biscuit, drawing them closer together so that they might accidentally end up kissing. It has inspired many fan arts for its romantic implications, and was also the theme of challenge videos.

The Pocky Game first appeared during Japanese student parties called konpa. The rules are as follows: the two players must each grab an extremity of the same Pocky stick, and start gnawing their way towards the middle of it. The game is won by reaching the middle of the stick first or by the other player letting go of the biscuit. The two players reaching the middle at the same time will result in an accidental kiss and a draw. This last particularity made this game particularly popular in the context of seduction.

The popularity of this game in Japan, as well as the fact that the Pocky is a Japanese biscuit, led to its appearance in several manga and anime , especially as a Japanese equivalent to the Spaghetti Kiss trope. The most famous instance is from the anime Ga-Rei: Zero, as the two main protagonists end up just kissing mid-game.

Due to the romantic setting of people accidentally kissing during a game, the Pocky Game has inspired many online artists, especially shippers, to draw their OTPs performing this game, and often focusing on the resulting "Pocky kiss." Artists also draw a character with one end of Pocky in their mouth as if they wanted to engage in a Pocky Game with another character or an off-screen one.

A good amount of fan art subverts the usual scenario, usually by having one of the characters focus only on either the kiss or eating the Pocky.

As far as 2008, many internet users have uploaded videos of "Pocky Game" or "Pocky Challenge" which follow a similar pattern: a Pocky Game held between two players who are also cosplaying, most of the time as an OTP couple from a manga or an anime, and often featuring a homosexual pairing. Although they were at first documenting such games spontaneously happening during anime conventions, as time went on, those videos were more often staged, specifically to narrate a shipping storyline akin to a fanfiction. The most viewed video of this kind on YouTube is inspired by Miraculous Ladybug and cumulated more than 3.2 million views since its upload on April 9th, 2018.

The Pocky Game also gained a lot of traction on Vine. A Vine compilation of homosexual Pocky Games was uploaded on Youtube on May 13th, 2016, gaining more than 1.9 million views.
