What type of communicative strategy is used to address the problems encountered in a conversation?

1. NOMINATION

  • collaboratively and productively establish a topic
  • Introducing a topic
  • Examples: Have you noticed the weird weather lately? Is this because of global warming?

2. RESTRICTION

  • limitation you may have as a speaker
  • Limiting the topic or scope of discussion.
  • Giving the listener a limited set of categories that is made by the speaker.
  • Example: That arrest move was a disaster waiting to happen. Do you agree?

3. TURN-TAKING

  • process by which people decide who takes the conversational floor
  • A strategy that someone uses in order to smoothly come in a certain situation/conversation. It requires that a speaker speaks only when it is already his turn during an interaction.
  • Example: I agree with the point just made. But may I add that OFWs would rather be home and work here so they could be with their families.

4. TOPIC CONTROL

  • covers how procedural formality or informality affects the development of topic in conversations
  • This strategy maintains the focus in a certain topic of discussion. It is also a question and answer formula that moves the discussion forward
  • Example: How often does that happen to you?

5. TOPIC SHIFTING

  • involves moving from one topic to another
  • It should be remembered that the shifting should be done with respect and proper transitions.
  • Example: This is a battle with corporations that continue to pollute the environment. But this is also a battle with a man himself, who continues to act as if there is another Earth we can move to once this Earth dies.

6. REPAIR COMMUNICATIVE STRATEGY

  • refers to how speakers address the problems in speaking, listening and comprehending that they may encounter in a conversation.
  • This strategy  includes requesting clarification, not acknowledging, topic shifting, not responding, repeating, recasting, and adding.
  • By not acknowledging the new situation the situation already in progress will continue.
  • Topic shifting can help direct the discussion to another topic or divert the attention of the listener from the topic that has become problematic.
  • Repeating is a good way of correcting oneself and gives the speaker the time to do just that.
  • Recasting means changing the form of a message that could not be understood in another way so that the listener can understand what was originally incomprehensible.

7. TERMINATION

  •  refers to the conversation participants’ close-initiating expressions that end a topic in a conversation.
  • Example: See you later.

1. Put a finger down if you often start the conversation on your group chat.

2. Put a finger down if you replied wrongly on a chat/ text message due to tiredness.

3. Put a finger down if you have tried solving misunderstanding between friends.

4. Put a finger down if you were shut up in a conversation.

5. Put a finger down if you often greet people using foreign language except English.

Discussion

In the past quarter, you learned what communication is. You also learned different models, speech context, speech styles, and speech acts. It is not only enough to have knowledge about communication. You should know how to establish communication, and on how we want to express what others need to know from us.

Every day, we engage in various conversations. We talk with our families, friends, classmates, and other people to establish connection and relationships. In the school, we exchange ideas with our teachers and classmates to maintain the teaching- learning process. As we grow older, we are exposed to conversations that maybe done with different approaches based on situations and factors such as educational background or degree of closeness/ relationship.

Conversations also does not limited to face- to- face conversation. Because of the technology, our way of communication is maximized and can reach to different parts of the world. We chat, we have exchange of views on a Facebook post, we call with our smartphones. We have media that aim to connect us in fast manner. 

The challenge for us is on how to start, sustain, and end a conversation successfully. We need to make sure that our messages are clearly understood by our listeners. We need to make them interested on what we are saying so that they can share their insight about the topic. We can use communicative strategies to achieve a healthy and successful communication. 

Cohen (1990) states that strategies must be used to start and maintain a conversation. The following are some strategies people can use to have effective communication.    

7 Types of Communicative Strategy

Nomination

This strategy is used to open or establish a topic in a conversation.     

Example:

I read from the newspaper that COVID-19 vaccination has started in United Kingdom.

Restriction

It refers to any limitation you may have as a speaker. In communication, you are restricted to follow instructions and you have limited things you can say.

Example:

Discuss the Pythagorean Theorem. 

Turn- taking

It refers to the process by which people decide who takes the conversational floor.

Example:

Anything to comment about his idea about digital learning?  

Topic Control

Topic control covers how procedural formality or informality affects the development of topic in conversations.   

Example:

You can only talk in a meeting if you are recognized by the presider.  

Topic Shifting

It involves moving from one topic to another.   

Example:

Speaker 1: I love Ben & Ben’s “Lifetime” song. It is pleasing to the ears.

Speaker 2: I agree. By the way, IV of Spades decided to have hiatus. I really miss their music.

Speaker: Me too. 

Repair

It refers to how speakers address the problems in speaking, listening, and comprehending that they may encounter in a conversation. 

Example:

I cannot understand what your classmate is saying. Please mute your microphone.  

Termination

Termination refers to the conversation participants’ close- initiating expressions that end a topic in a conversation.

Example:

I enjoyed talking with you. Maybe we can continue our conversation tomorrow.
