Bakken, located in Denmark, is said to be the oldest amusement park in the world that is still functioning. It first opened in 1583 and was a place where people went for clean water and beautiful scenery. In 1669 it was closed for private use by King Frederick III. It wasn't until 1756 that the park was finally opened to the public again by King Frederick V. It was during this time that vendors, performers, and rides began their introduction into the park.

The area is home to a natural spring, which attracted city-dwellers in Copenhagen with poor water quality to travel up north. Entertainers saw an audience in these large crowds of people and put on their best shows. Eventually, King Frederick III closed the grounds to the public until King Frederik V later reopened them in 1756. That’s when more performers, vendors, and rides slowly took over.
