Who was the love of Redfords life?

The late Betty White famously had a massive crush on fellow screen icon Robert Redford, and now the “Natural” actor says he “had a crush on her, too!”

Redford recently paid heartfelt tribute to White, who died on New Year’s Eve, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Throughout her extraordinary life, the “Golden Girls” star professed her love for Redford while remaining devoted to her husband of 18 years, Allen Ludden, who died in 1981.

“Betty lived life devoted to her craft and her love of animals,” Redford said in a statement provided Monday to the Los Angeles Times. “She made us all laugh, including me. I had a crush on her too!”

In one of her final interviews, White jokingly told People magazine that her “Proposal” co-star Ryan Reynolds couldn’t “get over his thing” for her, adding that Redford is “The One.” (Reynolds also honored White, praising her knack for “defying expectation.”)

Meanwhile, White’s longtime executive personal assistant, Kiersten Mikelas, told People that the Emmy winner received a cardboard cutout of Redford for her 99th birthday.

“For a long time, we had him in the office entryway,” Mikelas said. “When she came in, she’d say, ‘Hi, sweetheart.’”

Redford and Reynolds are just two of the many entertainment luminaries who fondly saluted White over the weekend. The cast of the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” collectively remembered White, who played Ann Douglas in the CBS series, as “a legend,” “an icon,” “a special lady” and “an amazing talented woman.”

“It was an honor to work with her,” tweeted Katherine Kelly Lang, who plays Brooke Logan on the daytime show. “What an amazing career ... She always had a smile on her face and spread [a lot] of positivity.”

“We can only learn from someone who has been on this planet for 99 years and we learned that laughter and her zest for life was truly the best medicine,” wrote Ron Moss, who played White’s grandson, Ridge Forrester.

In the wake of her death, various clips of White have gone viral on social media — including a late-night segment of her trading friendly insults with the late Joan Rivers, as well as footage of her playfully roasting her “Proposal” co-star Sandra Bullock at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

During a recent interview with People, White’s longtime friend and agent Jeff Witjas said the prolific performer “lived a great life and ... a life that she chose.”

“Every time I told her, ‘Betty, you’re loved,’ she would look at me with a wry smile and say, ‘Really?’” he recalled. “I hope she knew. I think she did. It was something beyond love.”

Iconic film All The President’s Men airs on BBC Two this evening at 11:10pm. The film is based on the groundbreaking Watergate scandal that ultimately led to Richard Nixon’s resignation as US President in the Seventies. Two rival reporters, Carl Bernstein and Richard Woodward, joined forces to research the careless burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. A mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat, helps the reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer.

The film follows the first seven months of the scandal that ultimately destroyed Nixon’s political career, from the time of the break-in to Nixon’s second inauguration in January 1973.

Mr Redford plays Woodward alongside Dustin Hoffman, who plays Bernstein.

The film was nominated in multiple Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA categories, and proved a landmark role for Mr Redford as it also reflected his offscreen concerns for political causes.

Behind the colourful career of one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars is a twice-married man.

Mr Redford met his first partner, Lola Van Wagenen, in the late Fifties.

They married in 1958 and had four children together — the first of which, Scott, tragically died at just two and a half months of sudden infant death syndrome — before divorcing in 1985.

Some 11 years later, he met his now-wife Sibylle Szaggars, 19 years his junior, and admitted she gave him a new lease of life.

Speaking to AARP Magazine in 2011, two years after the pair tied the knot, he said: “She's a very special person.

“She's younger than I am, and European, which I like, so that's a whole new life.”

Mr Redford continued: “I ride horses, ski, play pretty hard tennis.

“I still have energy. When that starts to shut down, I might start to think about age.”

Born in 1957, his wife is a multimedia environmental artist whose artwork has been exhibited across the world.

Her website says: “Her artistry spans across mediums and decades, from painted oil sketches and photographs of her Moroccan travels, expressions on canvas from her American Indian Pueblo visit and her recent works of watercolour abstracts shaped by the monsoon rains of Santa Fe, New Mexico, California and abroad.

“Her desire is to create art that transcends words, languages, cultures, and politics.

“She creates art in order to speak to a deeper universal consciousness that’s connected to and dependent on the earth and its environments.”

According to The Sun, she has also collaborated with international composers to create integrated live performance art for the benefit of environmental charities.

Now well into his Eighties, Mr Redford said that, unlike some of his co-stars, his priorities changed as he grew older.

He told AARP: “When I turned 40, I went into hiding!”

He continued: “When you get older, you learn certain life lessons.

“You apply that wisdom, and suddenly you say, 'Hey, I've got a new lease on this thing. So let's go.'”

Mr Redford announced in August 2018 that he would be hanging up his acting boots upon the completion of filming The Old Man and The Gun.

Yet, within a month, he was already having regrets.

He told People magazine: “I think it was a mistake to say that I was retiring because you never know.

“It did feel like it was time, maybe, to concentrate on another category.”

He added: “I shouldn’t have said that because it draws attention away from the film.”

Having made his Broadway debut in 1959, Mr Redford's success has continued right up until this very day.

He told the Daily Express earlier this week: “Any success for me has quite honestly been a bonus. I am taking the same attitude today.

“I will go on until someone says: ‘Stop, we don’t want you anymore’ or until I drop dead. Whichever is the sooner.”

Robert Redford said his new wife is giving him a new lease on life.

The actor and director said of German-born Sibylle Szaggars. “She’s a very special person.”

Redford, 74, told AARP The Magazine, “She’s younger than I am (in her early 50s), and European, which I like, so that’s a whole new life.” The two married in 2009.

If new love is helping Redford stay young, so is his renowned love of the outdoors, which hasn’t changed much in his 70s.

“I ride horses, ski, play pretty hard tennis,” he says. “I still have energy. When that starts to shut down, I might start to think about age.”

Redford, who says he’s “never interested in talking about myself,” nonetheless talked in the intervew about the death of his infant son and his mother’s death after a difficult pregnancy.

“It was really hard,” Redford says dealing with baby Scott’s death from SIDS in 1959 with his first wife, Lola. “We were very young … We didn’t know anything about SIDS, so the only thing you think is that you’ve done something wrong. As a parent, you tend to blame yourself. That creates a scar that probably never completely heals.” Their marriage ended in 1985.

Of his mother’s death at 40, when Redford was a teen, Redford says: “It seemed so unfair. But, in an odd way, it freed me to go off on my own, which I’d wanted to do for a long time.”

Redford is still working and planning to make more movies, both as an actor and a director. And he believes he brings a new perspective to his work these days.

“When you get older, you learn certain life lessons,” he says. “You apply that wisdom, and suddenly you say, ‘Hey, I’ve got a new lease on this thing. So let’s go.’ “

Cameron Diaz and Alexander Rodriguez ate dinner with Bill Clinton recently.

The high-profile dinner was in contrast to the usually secret pair’s outings.

The odd trio dined surrounded by a heavy presence of security, including Secret Service officers.

Onlookers said the group were in good spirits and sipped red wine at the luxury steakhouse. After the dinner, the movie star, the baseball player and the 64-year-old politician all left separately.
