Why didnt gronk play tonight

Update — Gronkowski has been ruled out for Thursday Night Football vs. the Eagles in Week 6, per Jordan Schultz.

Tuesday update — Gronkowski was a DNP at practice again on Tuesday ahead of TNF vs. the Eagles. So that isn’t helping his chances of returning to the lineup for Week 6. Coach Bruce Arians told Jenna Laine of ESPN that the Bucs won’t know if Gronk will travel with the team or not to Philly until Wednesday. Arians was encouraged by Gronk’s progress this week.

Monday evening update: To no surprise, Gronk did not participate in practice on Monday. This lends more credence to him being sat out of Thursday’s matchup in Philly as he continues to recover from his rib injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians indicated on Monday that it’ll be very close on whether or not tight end Rob Gronkowski will return this week, per Jenna Laine of ESPN.

Gronkowski has been out of action for the last weeks, going down in the Bucs’ Week 3 loss at the Los Angeles Rams. Gronk was taken out of the game after taking a gnarly hit, ultimately ending up with four cracked ribs, a broken rib, and a punctured lung. The future Hall of Famer has been week-to-week ever since.

Prior to the injury, Gronkowski was putting up numbers like his prime, New England self. He had 16 receptions for 184 yards and four touchdowns in just two-and-a-half games.

Fantasy football implications

The Bucs have a short week of preparation as they travel up to Philadelphia for the Thursday night game. For that reason, they’ll most likely rest Gronk for at least one more week and pencil him in for their Week 7 showdown against the Bears.

In the meantime, expect the committee of OJ Howard, Cameron Brate, and Codey McElroy to continue to hold down the fort at tight end.

Rob Gronkowski's New England homecoming won't happen on Sunday night, and the Buccaneers tight end could miss more time.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports Gronkowski did not travel with the Buccaneers and will be held out versus the Patriots, per a source. The team later announced the news.

The Buccaneers tight end was declared doubtful with a rib injury on the Bucs' official injury report Friday.

Gronkowski is dealing with at least four cracked ribs and has a punctured lung, Rapoport reported Sunday, per a source.

The tight end sustained the rib injury early in the third quarter of last week's road loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Gronk exited before returning late in the quarter, finishing the game with four catches for 55 yards.

This is the first game Gronkowski will miss since coming out of retirement to play in Tampa Bay ahead of the 2020 season, making his rib injury an untimely development ahead of he and Brady's return to New England. The 32-year-old got off to a hot start in 2021 with 16 receptions for 184 yards and four touchdowns in the first three games.

Bucs quarterback Tom Brady will still have great options at tight end despite Gronkowski's absence. Cameron Brate (five receptions, 43 yards) and O.J. Howard (2/32) are now poised to get more opportunities in the Bucs' high-powered offense which generates plenty of attention with a stellar receiving corps.

Rob Gronkowski hasn't played since Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season. He won't return to the field in Week 6 either.

The Buccaneers have already ruled Gronkowski out for their "Thursday Night Football" game against the Eagles. It marks the third consecutive game that Gronkowski will miss as a result of an injury he suffered against the Rams.

Gronkowski got hurt after he was hit hard while making a catch against Los Angeles. He went to the locker room after the play.

He would eventually return to the game, but it's amazing that he did. His injuries were of a particularly brutal variety.

What is Rob Gronkowski's injury?

Gronkowski told Fox Sports' Jay Glazer that he had suffered "four cracked ribs, one broken rib and a punctured lung" on that play against the Rams. Despite all that, the Bucs elected not to put him on IR.

In fact, the Buccaneers thought that Gronkowski may be able to suit up to play against his former team, the Patriots, in Week 4. That's part of why the team elected not to put him on injured reserve.

"We held out hope all week that Gronk would be ready," a team source told ESPN. "He's a different breed."

Gronkowski never made quite enough progress to play. As such, the team held him out for the team's win over the Patriots and he missed the team's Week 5 victory over the Dolphins as well.

How long is Rob Gronkowski out?

Gronkowski has now missed three games, the minimum required amount to miss for players on IR, but it doesn't seem like he'll miss many more.

Bucs coach Bruce Arians said that Gronkowski was "very close" to returning at Monday's media availability. He then said Gronk was making "really good progress" the following day. However, the Bucs evidently didn't feel comfortable enough to play him on a short week, and that's why they ruled him out.

It seems like Gronkowski should have a good chance to return to the Bucs' lineup in Week 7 given Arians' recent comments. His status will bear watching when the Buccaneers return to practice after their brief time off following Thursday's game.

Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady will be without his partner in crime, Rob Gronkowski, when the Buccaneers take the field against the Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Gronkowski did not make trip to New England due to ongoing complications from his rib injury he suffered and has been ruled out, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The five-time Pro Bowler suffered the injury when he caught a pass and was hit in the midsection by Rams' Terrell Lewis early in the third quarter. He left the game before returning later on in the quarter, finishing with four catches and 55 yards in the Buccaneers' loss to the Rams.

Gronkowski spent nine seasons (2010-18) with the Patriots where he recorded 521 receptions for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns. His 79 scores are the most receiving touchdowns in the franchise history.

He also recorded 81 receptions for 1,163 yards in 16 postseason games with the Patriots. Gronkowski is 15 yards shy from surpassing Greg Olsen for the fifth most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.

The Buccaneers will square off against the Patriots at 8:20 p.m. on Sunday.

More NFL Coverage:

Gronkowski, who suffered an injury to his ribs in Los Angeles last Sunday, did not accompany the team on its trip north Saturday. The Buccaneers then officially changed his status on the injury report from "doubtful" to "out." Gronkowski did not participate in any practices this week and will miss a game for the first time since joining the Buccaneers in 2020. He had started in all 23 games in 2020-21, including four postseason contests. Pierre-Paul also did not travel with the team; he had originally been listed as questionable on Friday after making a limited return to practice.

The Buccaneers are down to two healthy tight ends on the 53-man roster and will be looking for larger contributions from Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard. Brate has played 72 snaps through the first three weeks of the season and has five catches for 43 yards. Howard has played 31 snaps and has two catches for 32 yards. Both have occupied large roles in Tampa Bay's offense in the past; Brate has 228 career receptions for 2,481 and is tied for sixth in franchise history with 29 touchdowns scored. Howard has 107 career receptions for 1,634 yards and 14 touchdowns and has averaged a robust 15.3 yards per grab.

Gronkowski is the Buccaneers' current leader in touchdowns (four) and points scored (24) and has been on the field for 76% of the team's offensive snaps.

The timing of Gronkowski's injury is particularly disappointing because Sunday night's game was going to serve as a homecoming for both him and quarterback Tom Brady. Gronkowski played nine seasons for the Patriots (2010-18) before retiring in 2019 and them returning to the game in 2020 to join Brady in Tampa via a trade. As a Patriot, Gronkowski racked up 521 regular-season catches for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns and was a five-time Associated Press First-Team All-Pro. He added another 81 receptions for 1,163 yards and 12 touchdowns in the playoffs.

Pierre-Paul will miss a second straight game due to a shoulder injury and rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka will likely start in his place again. Cornerback Carlton Davis, who has started all three games so far this season, was a full participant in practice this week and was originally not given a game-status designation on Friday.

Desir, who has been on the Bucs' practice squad for almost three weeks, adds an experienced option to the cornerback group. He has played in 73 games with 44 starts during stints with the Browns, Chargers, Colts, Jets and Ravens. He most recently played 12 combined games with eight starts for the Jets and Ravens last season, recording 49 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes defensed. He has eight picks and 42 pass break-ups in his career.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2020, Davis has been inactive for the first three games of the season and saw action in just two games as a rookie.
