Why do dogs like laying in the sun Reddit

Why do some dogs like bathing in the sun or heat? Is it bad for them? from AskVet

There's literally 80% shade in my backyard. He chooses the one spot of direct sunlight and passes out.

It’s summer now and my dog has access to the backyard through a doggy door (she can leave whenever she wants). She LOVES to sunbathe and I’m starting to get worried because her skin is darkening.

Should I put sunscreen on her, limit her sun time, or is it not a big deal? I’m open to any suggestions!

Do I need to entice her to come in or just let her do her thing, she has shade and water and I’m never far just sometimes on the other side of the sliding door

My 2 y/o, 15 lbs of a mutt just loves sunbathing. I know it's pretty standard for dogs, but her new routine with us working from home has her in the sun for about 2 to 4 hours a day (as long as the sun shines on our west-facing balcony). She does come back inside to cool down periodically, but she has a light coat and much of her underside has no fur at all, so I know cancer could be a risk.

She really seems to enjoy basking, so I'd rather just let her, but if it's a long-term risk I'd probably limit her exposure. Am I justifiably worried or should she be fine? And if I choose to limit her time in the balcony, how long should it still be ok to let her out?

my dog will lay in the sun for hours and just chill or nap. like 3-4 hours a day.... i just think it's funny

I have a long coat Alaskan Mal and he loves to lay in the sun, even when it's 37c and higher, should I stop him doing this?

I live in New Mexico, where 90-100 degree summers are normal. Every dog I have ever known, no matter how big or small, no matter how much fur they have, likes to go lay out in the yard for an hour or more on a bright, sunny, summer day when I can barely tolerate sitting in the shade.

How can they stand this? They are obviously warm-blooded mammals, so it's not like they need the heat the way reptiles do. They're covered in fur for insulation, which (it seems to me) would just make it worse. It would be like me putting on a ski suit and laying in the sun.

I know that dogs don't sweat; they regulate their temperature by panting instead. But it seems to me that that would make it even worse to absorb that much heat in a short period of time. But they seem to love it. Does anyone know why?

My 4-year old goldendoodle likes to go on my porch every and lays down in the sunny area for about 2 hours, then comes back in and continues sleeping under the table... is he just absorbing vitamin D..? He didn’t have this behaviour until recently he started doing it every day. Anybody else’s dog do this?
