Minecraft Potions: A Detailed Guide (2022)

Each potion is used in different scenarios and purposes in Minecraft. Based on that, we have divided our list to make it easier for you to explore each potion. That said, let’s dive right in!

What is a Potion in Minecraft

Potions are bottled liquids in Minecraft that apply a magic-like effect to the user for a limited time. There are a variety of potions in the game, each with its own unique effects. Some are negative, some are neutral, and most other potions have positive effects. We will go over each time of potion individually later in the guide.

How to Brew A Potion in Minecraft

In Minecraft, all the potions are made by adding different items to a water bottle using a brewing stand. It’s a utility block that uses blaze powder as fuel and can create up to three potion bottles at once using a single ingredient.

Alternatively, you can also get potions by bartering with piglins in the Nether or by fishing in the overworld. Also, killing witches and wandering traders is another way to obtain potions, but you have to kill them while they are drinking the potion for them to drop it.

If nothing else proves to be fruitful, you can still get some potions in a chest loot of Ancient cities, end cities, igloo basements, and buried treasure.

Base Potions

All the base potions in Minecraft don’t have any power of their own. If used, they don’t have any effect on the target. The sole purpose of the base potions is to serve as an ingredient for creating advanced potions.

Awkward Potion

How to make each potion in minecraft

The awkward potion in Minecraft is the most common base potion, which is used in most potion recipes. It doesn’t have any effects of its own. To make an awkward potion, you need to use Nether warts as the main ingredient with water bottles.

  • Items Required– Nether warts, water bottles, and blaze powder
  • Effects– No effects
  • Purpose– To make other potions

Mundane Potion

How to make each potion in minecraft

Just like other base potions, the mundane potion doesn’t have any effects either. Its sole purpose is to serve as the main ingredient to brew the Potion of Weakness. If you want to craft it, you can do so by brewing water bottles with magma cream, rabbit’s foot, sugar, glistering melon, spider eye, or ghast tear. Irrespective of the main ingredient, all mundane potions are ineffective.

  • Items Required– Magma cream/rabbit’s foot/sugar/glistering melon/spider eye/ghast tear, water bottles, and blaze powder
  • Effects– No effects
  • Purpose– To make a Potion of Weakness

Thick Potion

How to make each potion in minecraft

As you might expect, even the thick potion has no effects. But to make things worse, it can’t even be used to make advanced potions in Minecraft 1.19. This potion doesn’t serve any purpose other than for probable decoration. You can make it by brewing water bottles with glowstone dust.

  • Items Required– Glowstone dust, water bottles, and blaze powder
  • Effects– No effects

Positive Potions

As the name reveals, positive potions are the ones that have a positive impact on its user. They are usually consumed directly by the player. Almost all positive potions in Minecraft use awkward potions as their base instead of water bottles.

Potion of Healing

How to make each potion in minecraft

The Potion of Healing instantly heals its user and can add up to 4 hearts to your health bar. You can make it by brewing a glistering melon slice with an awkward potion. You can also obtain this potion by killing a witch while it’s drinking this potion.

  • Items Required– Glistering melon slice, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Instant health
  • Duration– Instant

Potion of Regeneration

How to make each potion in minecraft

Instead of instant healing, the Potion of Regeneration restores the player’s health over a period of time. It is faster than the regular regeneration and isn’t affected by the hunger bar of the player. You can brew it by combining an awkward potion with a ghast tear.

  • Items Required– A ghast tear, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Health regeneration
  • Duration 45 seconds

Potion of Slow Falling

How to make each potion in minecraft

One of the best ways to avoid fall damage in Minecraft is by using a Potion of Slow Falling. It reduces the speed by which you fall from any in-game height, thus, eliminating the damage that comes with it. To brew this potion, you need to combine a phantom membrane with a bottle of awkward potion. You can get the membrane by killing phantoms that spawn if you don’t sleep for multiple days in the game.

  • Items Required– Phantom membrane, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Reduced speed of falling
  • Duration 1 minute 30 seconds

Potion of Fire Resistance

How to make each potion in minecraft

If you plan to make a Nether portal to explore the Nether dimension, it’s almost a necessity to brew a Potion of Fire Resistance. It makes you immune from fire and lava-based damage. You can brew magma cream with bottles of awkward potion to make this potion in Minecraft. Alternatively, you can also barter with piglins to obtain the Potion of Fire Resistance in Minecraft.

  • Items Required– Magma cream, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Immunity from lava and fire-based damage
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Swiftness

How to make each potion in minecraft

Working like a boost, the Potion of Swiftness allows you to jump higher and move at a much faster pace than usual. And since you only need to add sugar to awkward potions to make it, you can collect multiple copies of it easily.

  • Items Required– Sugar, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Increased movement speed and jump height
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Strength

How to make each potion in minecraft

Minecraft, most of the time, is a game based on close combat. Because of that, the Potion of Strength can easily topple fights toward one side. It increases the damage dealt with each hit of the player. And unlike any other potion, it uses the fuel of brewing, blaze powder, as its main ingredient.

  • Items Required– Awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Increased attack damage
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Leaping

How to make each potion in minecraft

This potion allows you to jump higher than usual, just like a rabbit in the game. But you still can’t jump as high as the Minecraft 1.19 frogs. If you are fine with the compromise, brew a rabbit’s foot with an awkward potion to obtain a Potion of Leaping.

  • Items Required– Rabbit’s foot, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Increased jump height
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Water Breathing

How to make each potion in minecraft

The oceans of Minecraft are brutal. You have to struggle to breathe, fight hostile mobs and keep swimming. Fortunately, the Potion of Water Breathing can make your life easier by allowing you to breathe underwater. You can create it by brewing a pufferfish with an awkward potion in Minecraft 1.19.

  • Items Required– Pufferfish, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Underwater breathing
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Night Vision

How to make each potion in minecraft

Since the arrival of Warden in Minecraft 1.19, the game has gotten a bit darker – both literally and figuratively. Fortunately, to counter that, all you need is the Potion of Night Vision. It allows you to see clearly in dark areas and even somewhat counter the Warden’s darkness effect. You simply need to add a golden carrot to an awkward potion to obtain this potion.

  • Items Required– Golden carrot, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– See in the dark
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Invisibility

How to make each potion in minecraft

As the name reveals, the Potion of Invisibility allows you to turn invisible. Doing so will make almost all the mobs in the game ignore you. But this doesn’t work with the Warden, which is a blind mob that relies upon vibrations.

To make this potion, you need to corrupt a Potion of Night Vision by brewing a fermented spider eye in it. Alternatively, you can also kill a wandering trader while it’s drinking the Potion of Invisibility to obtain it.

  • Items Required– Fermented spider eye, Potion of Night Vision, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Invisibility
  • Duration 3 minutes

Potion of Luck

How to make each potion in minecraft

The Potion of Luck is a Minecraft Java-exclusive potion that is not obtainable in the survival mode without commands. It increases the quantity of general loot as well as the chances for the players to obtain rarer loot. But until the potion officially gets a brewing recipe in the game (probably with Minecraft 1.20), you can use the following command to obtain it:

/give @p potion{Potion:"minecraft:luck"}

Negative Potions

All negative potions in Minecraft 1.19 apply negative effects to the target. Players usually use them as throwable splash potions, which we will cover in another section.

Potion of Weakness

How to make each potion in minecraft

A Potion of Weakness reduces the attack damage of the user who consumes it, making their each attack weaker than usual. It is a great potion to counter powerful enemies and well-geared players. To brew this, you only need to add a fermented spider eye to a water bottle.

  • Items Required– Fermented spider eye, water bottle, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Reduced attack damage
  • Duration 1 minute 30 seconds

Potion of Poison

How to make each potion in minecraft

You can use the Potion of Poison to give a poison effect to your target. It causes the consumer’s health to slowly degrade until it reaches one heart. But keep in mind that this potion can’t kill another player or mob. You can create it by brewing a fermented spider eye with the awkward potion in Minecraft 1.19.

  • Items Required– Fermented spider eye, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Reduced attack damage
  • Duration 45 seconds

Potion of Slowness

How to make each potion in minecraft

Many Minecraft fights – in PvP or against mobs – are based on the opponent’s speed. To counter that, the Potion of Slowness reduces the movement speed of its target by 15%. It slows down their attacks as well as general movement. To create it, you need to corrupt a Potion of Swiftness by adding a fermented spider eye in the brewing station.

  • Items Required– Fermented spider eye, Potion of Swiftness, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Reduced movement speed
  • Duration 1 minute 30 seconds

Potion of Harming

How to make each potion in minecraft

Instead of slow decay like the poison effect, the Potion of Harming instantly decreases 6 health points on impact. You can obtain it by corrupting the Potion of Poison with a fermented spider eye. Not to forget, Potion of Harming is the only potion that can kill its target, thus, making it the most dangerous potion in Minecraft 1.19.

  • Items Required– Fermented spider eye, Potion of Poison, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Reduced movement speed
  • Duration Instant

Potion of Decay

How to make each potion in minecraft

The Potion of Decay is a Bedrock exclusive potion that applies the Wither effect on its target. When it’s active, the target will continuously take damage until the effect ends. But, just like the Minecraft Java’s Potion of Luck, you can’t brew this in survival mode. Instead, you have to use the following command to obtain it:

/give @p potion 1 36

Potion of Turtle Master

Unlike any other potion, the Potion of the Turtle Master has both negative and positive effects. It makes you immune from all types of damage in the game, but while doing so it also heavily reduces your movement speed. Depending upon the situation, it can be a lifesaver as well as a reliable weapon. You can craft it by brewing a turtle shell with an awkward potion.

  • Items Required–Turtle shell, awkward potion, and blaze powder
  • Effects– Invulnerability and reduced movement speed
  • Duration 20 seconds

Types of Potions in Minecraft 1.19

Potions are a powerful resource even in their basic form. But by brewing them with the right ingredient, you can push them a step further. Here are all the ways you can modify your potions in Minecraft 1.19:

  • Gunpowder: Turn a potion into a splash potion
  • Dragon’s Breath: Turn a splash potion into a lingering potion
  • Redstone dust: Increase the duration of time-bound potions
  • Glowstone dust: Improve the strength of a potion while decreasing its duration

Splash Potions

By default, the only way to use a potion in Minecraft is by consuming it. But that becomes a fatal flow when negative potions come into the picture. You first have to convert them into throwable splash potions. To do so, add gunpowder to a regular potion using a brewing stand. When the brewing finishes, your potion bottle will have its head bent, giving you a visual indicator of its throwable nature.

How to make each potion in minecraft

If thrown at the right time and angle, a splash potion can affect all entities with a maximum range of 8 blocks. Though, the effect of the potion weakens with the increase in the mob’s distance from the center of impact.

Lingering Potions

The splash potions are a great weapon, but only if you have good aim or if your target isn’t moving around too much. Fortunately, if you add dragon’s breath to the splash potion, it will become a lingering potion. It is also a throwable potion but instead of having a direct impact, it leaves a smoke cloud at the area of impact.

How to make each potion in minecraft

Then whenever an entity comes in contact with the cloud, it gets affected by the potion’s effect. This cloud starts with a radius of 3 blocks but slowly becomes smaller and vanishes after 30 seconds. Though, the size of the cloud doesn’t affect the strength of the potion effect. If you use instant lingering potions, you can easily harm or heal the target more effectively than direct consumption.

Extended Potions

How to make each potion in minecraft

More than half of the Minecraft 1.19 potions listed above are time-bound. Their effects wear off after a few seconds or minutes. But if you add Redstone dust to your potion, you can make the potion last for a longer duration. Though, it doesn’t affect the potions that have instant effects like the potion of healing.

How to Level Up Potions

How to make each potion in minecraft

One of the best ways to improve your potions is by leveling them up. You can do so by adding glowstone dust to the potion. This will cause the potion’s strength to increase making its effects more powerful. But to avoid making them overpowered, the game also reduces the duration of the time-bound potions. Not to forget, glowstone dust doesn’t impact base potions and the potion of invisibility.

India finally kicked off the 5G spectrum auctions this Tuesday on 26th July, 2022. The auction is currently in progress with India’s major telecom providers – Reliance Jio, Airtel, Idea-Vodafone, and the new entrant, Adani Data Networks — aggressively participating in the 5G bidding. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister for Electronics & IT in India, said that bids worth Rs 1.49 lakhs have been received so far. While spectrum bidding and allocation is underway, let’s learn about 5G bands supported in India. This will help you understand whether your 5G smartphone will be compatible with the 5G bands in India. On that note, let’s begin.

5G Bands in India: Explained (2022)

In this article, we have added all the supported 5G bands in India, including the low-band, mid-band, and top-tier mmWave frequencies. You can also find the list of supported 5G bands in a tabular format below.

What 5G Bands are Supported in India?

The 5G auction is currently ongoing in India, and it will last until August 14, 2022. However, some key information regarding 5G bands is already in the public domain. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has floated the sale of these 5G frequency bands: 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,300 MHz, 3,300MHz, 3,500 MHz, and 26 GHz.

As you can notice, radio bands from all categories — be it low-band, mid-band, or high-band (mmWave) — are all available. If you want to learn about different types of 5G bands (sub-6GHz vs mmWave), head over to our linked explainer.

How to make each potion in minecraft

Among the auctioned frequency bands, there are two 5G bands that telecom giants are most interested in: the low-band 700MHz (n28) and mid-band 3500MHz (n78). The n78 (3300-3800MHz) spectrum is a popular 5G frequency band to deliver sub-6GHz 5G services to the masses. It comes under the mid-band category and can deliver speeds close to 1Gbps. Sure, it’s not as fast as the mmWave 5G, but it’s cost-effective, works over a larger range, and is accessible across the world.

Not to mention, 5G phones from Apple and Samsung to Xiaomi, Realme, etc., all come with the n78 5G band support. So yeah, the n78 5G band is supported in India. Even the original OnePlus Nord, which supports one 5G band, supports the n78 5G band. So yeah, you will also be able to enjoy 5G services when they launch in India. According to some reports, a good tranche of 3.5GHz airwaves has been bought by both Jio and Airtel.

How to make each potion in minecraft

Apart from that, telcos are aggressively bidding for the low-band 700MHz frequency as it’s being touted to bring 5G to both remote and dense areas. The 700MHz frequency band can easily penetrate walls and buildings and can extend the 5G coverage area significantly. It’s also twice as efficient as 900MHz and much cheaper than the 1800MHz frequency band, which is usually used in rural areas to extend the coverage.

In addition, the 700MHz can be used to deliver true standalone 5G (SA 5G), but it will require the telecom operators to upgrade their whole network gear. Nevertheless, the n28 frequency is another 5G band that will be supported in India by almost all the telecom companies and smartphones.

Finally, Adani Data Networks and Jio are showing great interest in the ultra-fast mmWave 5G band, specifically the n258 band, also known as the 26GHz (24.25 – 27.5 GHz) frequency band. This is an elite, ultra-low latency 5G band that promises speeds up to 10Gbps.

At this point, you might be wondering what Adani’s 5G plans look like? Analysts suggest that Adani Data Networks might deliver its true 5G services to enterprises, building a superfast indoor network. Apart from that, the n41 (2.5GHz), n77 (3300 – 4200MHz), and the n79 (4400 – 5000MHz) 5G bands are also making a buzz in the mid-band 5G segment. It has merely been two days since the 5G auction started, so we are expecting more sub-6GHz 5G bands to be sold in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates on this front as we will be updating this article once the 5G auction comes to a close.

List of Supported 5G Bands in India (August 2022)

5G Network Release Timeline in India

After the first day of the 5G spectrum auction in India, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the bidding of the 5G spectrum will be completed by August 14. That means it’s likely that Prime Minister Modi will announce the initial launch of 5G services on August 15, in line with recent speculations.

After that, somewhere between September and October later this year, 5G services will be rolled out to consumers in pilot testing stage. Additionally, 5G services will be initially offered in 13 Indian cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gurugram, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune.

So yeah, by the end of October, one of the telcos – be it Airtel, Reliance Jio, or Vodafone Idea (Vi) – will start offering sub-6GHz 5G services to consumers in Indian cities. However, the full-fledged rollout of 5G services in India will take some time and the network will be ready to deploy by March 2023, as revealed by Vaishnaw at the Viva Technology 2022 event.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When will the 5G auction end in India?

The 2022 5G spectrum auction in India will continue till August 14. Following that, the spectrums will be allocated to telecom providers for testing and final rollout.

When will 5G arrive in India?

According to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, initial testing of 5G services will happen around September or October in India. However, the full-fledged rollout of 5G services is expected to begin as early as March 2023.

What are the supported 5G bands in India?

Some of the supported 5G bands in India are n78, n77, n28, and n41. For a complete list, read our article to learn about the compatible 5G frequencies and bands in the country.

Is mmWave 5G coming to India?

Yes, the Indian government is auctioning spectrum for the 26GHz (n258) frequency band, which offers unparalleled speed and almost zero latency. Both Jio and Adani Data Networks have shown keen interest in buying the top-tier spectrum.

What 5G bands should I look for in a smartphone in India?

If you have a budget phone, you should check whether the smartphone supports n78, n77, n41, and n28 5G bands. This should offer a good 5G network experience in India. For flagship devices, having support for the mmWave n258 5G band would be awesome. That said, keep in mind that Apple and Samsung currently don’t offer mmWave 5G band support on their flagship smartphones in India. Perhaps after the 5G rollout, things may change.

5G Bands of Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea & Adani in India

So that’s everything you need to know about all supported 5G frequency bands in India. As we mentioned above, the auction is currently in progress, and the situation of the spectrum allocation will be clear by mid-August. Having said that, we have a broad idea about what major 5G bands will be supported in India, and it seems like mid-tier 5G bands will be launched first in some Indian cities later this year. Anyway, that is all from us. If you want to learn more about 5G development in India, head over to our linked article. And if you have any questions, let us know in the comment section below.
